Got a Penny?

Tips and Tricks for posing children.

I don\'t have a penny.... or do I....If you are an amateur or professional photographer, when working with children, a simple penny can be a fantastic tool. Here’s what you do to create a fun, spontaneous and creative shoot.

First, select your background and any props you will be using i.e. dolls, toys, sports equipment, special clothing. Second, be sure to set up and check your lighting before placing your subject, saving time once those precious moments start to happen.

Now, bring the children or child in and place them in position. Take a shiny penny and show it to them while explaining that it is very special. (A quick note, don’t use a penny with small children because they will want to put the penny in their mouth.) Place the penny on one knee and then tell the child they need to cover the penny with their hands, one on top of the other. If you are posing a little girl, get her to cross her legs first, then place the penny on the top knee, hands piled on one another. If you have a helper or assistant, have them do this so you are ready to shoot. And be ready because you won’t believe the expressions they make while hiding a penny. Tell them to look at the camera and talk to them about the penny. They will look down and up several times; keep shooting! Finally, ask them to pick up the penny and show it to you. The biggest smile in the world will cross their face when they hear those words. You can reward them by letting them keep the penny.

Another way to use pennies is to place them on the location, placing it where you want the children to be. Have them step, stand, or sit on the penny. This always makes them laugh! I have found that children often come up with delightful creative posing ideas on their own.

The thing to keep in mind when working with children stay calm and assertive. They like to know who is in charge, but don’t like to be told exactly what to do. The simple penny will help to keep them focused and help you get the shot.
