.XMP, Database Backup Questions

I am also one that ended up with a number of .XMP files in my main photo album.  I would have thought they would be in the individual folder where the particular photo related to the .xmp file is but all .xmp files are in the main photo album.  Anyway, that really isn't my biggest problem as from what I have read here I will simply delete them and turn off the option for the future.   One question on it though.  I turn it off in Tools>Options>Database>Metadata?

On the 7th I imported some photos with the option selected that the photos be backuped to an external hard drive.  For some reason I ended up with three copies of the photos on my computer instead of two but it was easily rectified as I only had to do a search to find where the third copy was - there were two copies on the external hard drive.

On the 8th I imported photos with the same options i.e. backup to external hard drive.  Now is when my problem arose.  ACDSee Pro 2.5 started crashing.  I followed all the instructions I could find on this site - running registry key remover, then option 2, then option 3.  The program now seems to be stable BUT if I so a search it  isn't bringing up the photos on the external hard drive and if I open the files on the external hard drive the photos do not show that they are categorized.

I guess I should add that my OS is Vista Ultimate, 6 GB RAM.

I don't knwo what you mean by "album" here, but XMP files created by ACDSee are indeed always in the same *folder* as the actual image,.  And if you move the image using ACDSee, the XMP file moves with it.  Only if you moved the files using another program would you normally have XMP files in a folder other than the folder containing the corresponding image.

One question on it though.  I turn it off in Tools>Options>Database>Metadata?

If you want to turn off the embedding operation completely, uncheck the "display embed database information reminded" in tht same dialog.  If you want to embed db info for files that support true embedding but don't want to create XMP files for files that don't support embedding, the option to do that is in the dialog where the embedding takes place.  Uncheck the "Write sidecars" option.

Might be worth trying to figure out how that happened.  Does it happen every time?  where on the external drive was the copy you didn't intentionally create?

There are lots of possible causes of crashes, and lot of possible thigns to do do to try to eliminate them.  I'm not sure which "option 2" or "option 3" you refer to here.

Did option 2 or 3 involve deleting the database?  that would obviosuly do it right there.  Otherwise, sounds like your external drive is excluded from the database and you need to remove it from the excluded list via Database->Excluded Folder Settings.  Do little red "no" icons show up on the thumbnails?
