Workflow and database files

I am creating an archive of photos for an organization that I am a member of for purposes of knowing what we have and where to find it.  I bought ACDSee Photo Manager 2009 for evaluation to determine if it work for this.  I have bee working on this for about three years and have collected 10,000 images.  It is a growing collection that correctly resides on my hard drive sorted into categories and is backed up regularly.  This brings a workflow question of how to work with an ever growing collection.  The only way I can think to add images to a catalog is to leave them on the hard drive and when I add something to the folder add them to a catalog and continue to make good back ups.  I am reluctant to leave them on the hard drive for several reasons.

Are there any other suggestions for doing what I want?  Also what is the file suffix for the database files and what is the default storage location?

I don't understand exactly what you are asking, but if you're looking for general advice on managing a growing collection of images, here are some ideas I shared here a while back:

As for the location of the database folder, that can be foudn via Tools->Options->Database.  There are several different extensions involved, as you will see if you browse to that folder.  I don't know what's what, but I beleive the underlying db technology is "foxpro", so you could probably look up info about that.

Sometimes we all “think out loud”, meaning blurting out to the community something that we could probably figure out for ourselves with enough time.

My management question was a difficult one that I hurriedly composed.  I know better than that!  It also hints of my lack of sophistication with backing up my data here at home.

What I was actually trying to ask is general tips on how to manage a growing collection on (portable) optical media (CDs and DVDs) rather than on a hard drive as one might ordinarily do.  The main reason I would prefer not to keep the images on my hard drive is they are not mine to lose if the hard drive fails.  I did find the “Digital Asset Management” (DAM) post a few hours after I posted my original question.  Also I have resolved my original workflow question with the acquisition of a one terabyte external hard drive where I mirror the folder containing the image collection as well as database files.  I did also find the database files location using the Photo Manager Help.

By the way, I found your “DAM” article to be well written and full of very good information.  I compliment your work!

I have used another DAM for some years with my personal image collection.  For this project that software was too complicated and way too expensive.  When I started with it was one of maybe two software packages that did DAM.  Once upon a time I would just write my own software.  These days I’m more interested in enjoying shooting and enjoying my images than inventing software solutions that others have already invented!

I’ll look about the FoxPro DB questions you’ve asked.  Years ago a worked in FoxPro but no longer own the software.  I do have some friends that are still active in that arena so I will make some queries.

So far I’m impressed with what I see from ACDSee.  I will be looking at evaluating ACDSee Pro for other projects.

    Thanks again,
