Matthew, you asked for bug lists in another thread, but as I was browsing the Canvas 11 trial and comparing it to Canvas X I realized that we needed a thoughtful thread on what major improvements might be made to Canvas in existing areas.
I take pictures of projects I have done to use in brochures and postcards. I do two things to all pictures. First, I straighten the lines so that objects are straight and true. Second, I adjust color, hue, brightness, contrast, highlights, and shadows.
I looked at how the envelope tool works compared to another product I use: Serif Page Plus X3, which calls this tool Mesh Warp. PPX3 has real time image adjustment. If I move the corner nodes, or the outrigger nodes which adjust the alignment of the image, the image is adjusted on screen immediately as I move the nodes. It might take me 2-3 minutes to do all the adjustments necessary. In contrast, the Canvas envelope tool, which is identical to the PPX3 tool, does not do real time adjustment. In fact, you must double click on the screen each time you want the computer to regenerate the image. This process takes a long time. It is impossible to tell what adjustments you have made until the picture has finished regenerating. I foresee this process taking the best part of an hour. My suggestion is that this tool, which is essential to picture editing, be revamped to operate as the PPX3 tool operates.
I use another program named Serif PhotoPlus X3 for editing color, brightness, etc. Ihave always liked the way Canvas has manipulated color, etc. However, after using the Serif photo program, and coming back to Canvas, I realized that the adjustments provided by Canvas need serious overhauling. For instance, there is no way to adjust the intensity and darkness of shadows or highlights, only the color. I was able to take a poor digital image of a custom built-in bookcase and adjust it to where it looked like a magazine photograph in PhotoPlus. The process took about a half hour. Canvas just did not have the tools to do the same thing.
My thoughts on Canvas is that it needs to look at some of the competition regarding the functioning of it's existing tools. I would add highlight and shadow adjustments to the "brightness / contrast" tool. Finally, I did not see any improvement in these tools between Canvas X and Canvas 11.
Comments, anyone?
