Were you thinking non-destructive editing of jpegs? that is impractical to do, because in order to upload to the web or to send to someone else, the image must be saved as you want to see it.
True, but that's not a problem. Picasa, Lightroom, Aperture, and probably others provide some sort of facility along these lines. Some force you to take an explicit "export" action to lock in your changes, some make the changes "in place" but save the original off elsewhere so you don't need an explicit export operation; either method can work. And if I'm understanding what I see in the blurbs about Pro 3 that appear on this site, it *does* appear that something like this will be offered. It doesn't specifically say if the exports you mention are automatic or if you'd have to take any explicit action to export your changes.
The description I'm talking about says: "Take advantage of the new Process mode to dynamically adjust images of any format, including RAW, TIFF, JPEG and more. Quickly and easily complete global non-destructive adjustments and pixel-level editing in one intuitive workflow. You’ll achieve your desired results faster because you always see the results of your adjustments in real time." Sure sounds like non-destructive editing for JPEG to me!

Critical to my workflow is the ability to create a new line in the Notes field by hitting the Enter key.
Do note that Ctrl-J will do this. Silly to have to do that, I know, but I was very relieved when someone pointed it out to me.

Marc,
Ctrl-J. Absolutely crazy but at least it's a workable method and many thanks for pointing it out. I still hope the program developers will revert to the universally recognised way of creating new line.

with you on this one - I rarly use the databse features and find it all a nuisance
I had tons of problem with the database.
Some time it takes years to open and the fix option never worked fine to me and I had to hunt the filesystem to erase the files...
PLEASE :-)
1) Put an option to 100% disable the database
2) Put a button to kill the database from scratch

About going back to basic and fix your existing bugs/problems first, like "Autorotate RAW files" (Sony A700). Stop the frequent crashes. Stop writing the camera manufactor name (Sony) in the IPTC caption field. Stop the cursor from "Jumping" and "moving" the highlighted thumbnail around. Then, you can give us 100% support on Geotagging. 100% capability of editing the DB fields like the Commonly Used Keywords (IPTC) on the Organize Panel...
Thank you.

I would like to offer my thoughts on using this program. I believe the value of this program is largely in the management of my digital assets. As a pro shooter I already have all the other software for completing my digital darkroom and working with files.
What I need this program for is;
a. Fast indexing and rendering of my images so I can find what I am looking for.
b. Fast access to my photo editors, developers, graphic and printing programs. (I would like it to be easier to get to these programs. I keep opening the internal editor instead.)
c. Centralized file management features that allow me to manage my images quickly and accurately. This implies a database driven application that manages these issues with stability and that can grow with a user's own professional growth. The value of this program is largely wrapped up in the database and accessing your files! The word database implies stability.
These are very big issues that most often influence client time lines and me getting paid for what is on my hard drives. It is extremely important to be able to access what I have while the client is hot for it! No small feat, I add at least eight to fifty gigs of images every week! I have several different programs that compete for raw development, jpeg and tiff modification, layout and publishing and printing to name but a few types. And I doubt this program will compete favorably for top honors and daily use in any of these categories. A displacement of editing software in my existing workflow is highly unlikely. Those pieces of software already in place, have come through the test of fire. They are not going to be overtaken without some serious code.
If ACDsee Pro 3 can step up in these areas, that’s fine. We can take our time evaluating these new features and use what makes sense. It’s all good! But in the meantime managing my digital assets is a very important job and currently a rather large hole in my workflow. If this program can compete for this position day in and day out, then I believe my lineup will be complete and very hard to disrupt.
Keep in mind this is a pro strategy. If you approach this from the perspective of a hobbyist you may find value in adding new features and cutting down on software expense, instead of using best of class. That is not what a pro does.
I bought all the other DAM software (pun intended) that compete with this one and used them. I like the interface of ACDsee pro 2.5 the best, so I keep coming back. So I would suggest focusing on management features like keywording, rating and sorting (like the calendar feature which is very helpful). Things that solve problems for photographers at a professional level. And then make it very fast and bullet proof! You can tinker with the mix later! I am always open to temptation.

Just finished read about others instability issues, went back to Pro 2.5 and it crashed within 1 minute, while attempting to move from one folder to another. Fixing the instability is my number 1 request. More bells and whistles could then follow.

Based on the description of the Pro 3 Beta, what aspect(s) of the product are you most looking forward to?
I would like to see the3 following features:
Geo-tagging & Map display. I would like to become able to merge my pictures with the GPS data I have recorded (or manually set it on a map) and to display the picture locations on a map. Today I have to do this with a separate tool (GeoSetter).
Ability to manage multiple versions of the same picture. It would be extremely helpful to get support managing multiple versions and formats of the same picture, e.g. to assign categories only once for the jpeg and the raw images or to become able to go back several edit version of a picture (the back to original feature in 2.5 was already a great help to me).
Sony Maker Note support. With the transition from Minolta to Sony ACDSee has lost the ability to properly handle the EXIF maker notes, it even corrupts them (luckily not severely). I would like to get full Sony EXIF Maker Note support, e.g. to see the lens I have used.
Annotations to Categories. I would like to get the possibility to add notes to my categories, e.g. links to related web sites. I would also be helpful to be to have category names in multiple languages, e.g. for bird names (English, German, Latin).

I have to agree with others who have commented on the Colour EQ. I have used the Light EQ and absolutely love the features. One can create a HDR look, can rescue many lost photos and create unique exposures with this feature. I am excited about the possibilities of the Colour EQ. And please ensure the Light EQ remains...with improvements if that is possible.

I’ve tested Acdsee Pro 2.5; I really appreciate it for a lot of functions and I think it is the best and fastest photo manager for me. However I think it is defective particularly in batch (and also not batch) function for iptc and exif field management especially for iptc keywording. I’ve tested, likewise, the very flexible and very powerful iptc keywording and metadata management in Adobe Lightroom 2.0 and I would like to have (in addition to Acdsee “Batch Set Information”) the same functions of Lightroom and, if possible, even more, in Acdsee... and so Acdsee 3.0 will become MY definitive photo manager.
Some of the very good, simple and winning functionalities present in Lightroom 2.0, and not present in Acdsee Pro 2.5 (as in Photo Mechanic, iViewMeidaPro, iMatch, and others) are listed below.
- Lightroom provides several ways to apply iptc keyword tags to one or MORE SELECTED PHOTOS. You can simply select all the photos you want and mark on iptc keywords in the keyword list panel (but also type or select the keywords in the Keywording panel, or drag photos to specific keyword tags in the Keyword List panel or use the very good “Painter” that lets you apply keywords, and other attributes, quickly by dragging the Painter tool across photos, like a sprayer). You can specify one or more SYNONYMS, i.e. “ballet-dancer”, NPT=“Non Preferred Term”, use (=USE) “ballerina”, PT=“preferred term” (used for=UF “ballet-dancer”). If the selected images have already associated further iptc keywords, these will be preserved.
Acdsee could improve the synonyms function adding also the “RELATED TERMS” (=RT, i.e.: “dance” and “dancing” for “ballerina”) and get synonyms and related terms directly typed in the iptc keyword field and directly saved in the file (not only after the photo exportation, like in Lightroom).
- It is sufficient to select multiple images, to go in the metadata panel and fill the exif and iptc fields you want (in Acdsee a multiple selection of images makes even disappear the iptc and exif property panel where I would like to act!).
- You can delete o rename, in one second, one iptc keyword directly from the list (from the contextual menu), even if it is still associated to some image (and this iptc keyword will be deleted/renamed from any associated image).
- You can very easily HIERARCHIZE iptc keywords (also by a simple drag and dropping) and when you associate one “child” iptc keyword (NT=”Narrower Term”, i.e. “cat” or “dog”) to an image, the software automatically associates to the image also its “mother” iptc keywords (BT=”Broader Term”, i.e.: “animals”). Besides, if a iptc keyword (i.e. “earth”) is linked to one or more synonyms (i.e. “land”) automatically these will be associated to the image (and you will find it also through these synonyms). You can modify the hierarchies in any moment; of course the modifications will be reflected in the associated images. You can also create HOMONYMS placed in different points of the tree (i.e.: “ballerina” ballet-dancer and “ballerina” shoe). You can export this keyword tree in a useful txt file.
Acdsee could increase this function with specific commands and/or push-button to view all the tree voices compacted (only the 1° level voices) or gradually opened (1° and 2° level voices, 1°, 2° and 3° level, and so on).
- Each iptc keyword tag, viewed in the Keyword List panel, displays the number of photos containing it and clicking on the right arrows it is possible to make an instantaneous and useful search of these images.
- You can find quickly a keyword, between thousands, with the magic keyword search box (above the keyword list).
- Keyword tags can also be organized into groups called keyword sets. By choosing a specific keyword set, relevant keyword tags are more accessible. This is especially useful as you add more keyword tags to the catalogue.
All these powerful features are particularly useful because you can do a DYNAMIC KEYWORDING, that is necessary to create, step by step, a personal controlled and hierarchized vocabulary, with the necessary reversibility and possibility of correction. A long simple list of keywords, makes these hardly traceable and usable.
Besides, it would be good if Acdsee had a more customizable way to rename files (i.e. YYYYMMDD HHMM Nomefile --> “20090508 1239 DSC_0825.JPG”).
In Acdsee, the following features, and more others, are very useful and I hope they will not change:
- really fast in viewing and zooming images, in the navigator and in the viewer.
- Acdsee is a real image browser (you can see all images of your disks without preventive charging them on the catalogue... you can copy and past images, etc.)
- gradual zoom in and zoom out in any situation with Ctrl+mouse wheel.
- instant slide show (with manual advancement and, if necessary, properties windows) in widescreen simply doing double click on the thumbnails.
I dare suggest you to test deeply Lightroom 2.0, read User Guide (http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Lightroom/2.0/lightroom_2_help.pdf) especially the Keyword chapter and, if possible, “copy” it for the exif and iptc management, in particular their batch functions and iptc keywording, indeed, make them also better.
I’m disposed to test your Acdsee Pro 3.0 beta version and give you suggestions about these matters, if you need.
In my opinion all these questions are very important, if you really want your good software be the best.
Tanks

There are a lot of additional features I'waiting for a long time - here some of the most urgent for me: (sorry if it may sometimes be unclear what I mean - I'm a german, and often I miss the special words to name the items. @ ACDSee-developers: if so, just ask me for more details, if you need.)
- add colours tags as Lightroom has it (which shall clearly be shown below the thumbnails). A free individual text label should be possible to assign to them. The tags should be included in the organize-window. The tags shall be usable for (combined) searching, for 'selection' and 'filtering'.
- inside "special categories" in the organize-window, it should be possible to define own, new categories.
- in every selection and search function, it should not only be possible to select a criteria or category (as now), it should also be possible to concretely exclude a criteria / category (use of logical 'not').
- in the "standard" view with F7 (in german 'Leuchtstreifen') the stripe with the thumbnails at the bottom should appear as now or alternative, by user's choice, appear over the full monitor's width.
- add "neutral", "put back" to the assessment values (in german: 'Bewertungen')
- add an easy(!) way to erase the embedded metadata of picture(s)
- inside the backup-function for the database, I miss a possibility to erase old entries in the list field.
- add the possibility to use own icons for the categories.
- for Easy-Select function inside the categories, the functionality "all of them" / " just one" (in german: "Einige Begriffe passen" / "Alle Begriffe passen" should be selected not inside a list field (which doesn't show the current choice!) - they should be selectable directly with separate buttons for each option.
- create a more comfortable keyword-editor functionality. I would prefer to edit the list (alternatively) in Excel, so it should be possible to import and export it from / to Excel.
- Please implement the full IPTC-core, throw out old label and keep the official labels (names) as well in english as in the individual translations. Also, up to now, some of the labels occur with different names in the metadata-list and in the batch-processing! That shouldn't be...
- add stack functionality (like in Adobe Brigde)
- windows at the left and right side (like organisation, calendar, etc.): I would like to pull (fade) them easily in and out just with the mouse, as Lightroom offers it
- when i re-import a database-backup, I found that the categories are not restored. That's bad.
- in the moment, to change an EXIF- or IPTC-value inside the metadata-window, two clicks are neccesary to do. It would be asier with just one click (directly into the field to be edited).
I think, this is not all, but almost...
Thanks, Micha

Here's another thing I forgot:
Please add the ability to edit metadata for .PSD files !!
Right now if there is metadata in my PSD files, I can only view it in ACDSee Pro 2.5, but cannot edit it. I have to use Photoshop in order to add/edit metadata.

FWIW, I don't mean to rain on the parade of great ideas here, but my interpretation of Cam's question was not to ask for new ideas for enhancements, but rather, to have people look at the *actual list of enhancements planned for Pro 3* (in the link he provided), to see which of those people were most excited by.

I'm looking forward to :
- Database Stability
- Non-Destructive Editing
- Editing with many tasks appearing at hand in a pane next to the image (vs. clickng in and out of several different functions).
- The advanced color and vibrance tool
- The noise reduction tool looks interesting. Might be nice for images that don't need full-blown Noise Ninja treatment.
