I got ACDSee Photo Manager 2009 and absolutely love it like every other version in the past I've tried but I HATE how it takes over as the default file explorer, that sucks! How do I change this without removing the program? I love the program, don't want to move it, but I just want Explorer back as the default browser.

Sorry not sure I understand your point. What happens when you open windows explorer?

Guessing you are talking about what software opens which files in windows explorer??
If so, here's the help: How can I have certain image types open directly with software other than ACDSee?

No, lol. I mean, when I go to My Computer, double click one of my drives it opens up ACDSee Photo Manager automagically. It replaced my Explrorer as the default browser, which I'm sure all of you who have installed it also should have noticed. If I want to go to my drives in Explorer I now have to right click C: and choose Explore. That's lame, why does it take over like this lol and how to fix? I'm a network admin for my job so I'm not a noob when it comes to anything so I'm guessing there must be a registry key that can fix this somewhere I just can't find it.

Well I'm sure someone would have noticed if it had happened to them but to my knowledge I have never seen this reported. Have you altered something in the properties for the drive in question.

Yes I'm 100% sure heh. I actually installed another variation of this product awhile back, think it was ACDsee Pro 2.5 and it did the same thing so I uninstalled it. I'm sure this is an intended feature of the product and you may not see many people report it as most people either don't notice it, don't care, or actually like it so they don't mention it. I for one hate it, it's bs that it does that imo as it's slower and I didn't see anywhere in the install where it tells you it's going to do that nore give you any options not do that. It really makes no sense why they'd do this anyway nor I don't see how it's legal because this is essentially like what Microsoft got in trouble with when they integrated Internet Explorer with Windows and got sued. I mean this is a photo editor/viewer software, which again I have supported and used for years and loved, so why does it force something unrelated to the software to some other area of your PC? Basically that would be like me installing lets say some cooking software that is just a cookbook basically with recipes, and it magically also replaced Internet Explorer as my default web browser and replaced it with some browser that's full of cooking/recipe junk and give me no way to change my default browser back. But please there must be a way to fix this, any info would be helpful thanks.

I can assure you this is not the case. People don't mention it here because it doesn't happen to most people. I've been using ACDsee for years and never seen anything like that. I've been a moderator on this forum for much of that time, and as far as I know, the thread referenced above is the only time the issue has come up. So hopefully the advice given there will solve the problem for you, but if not, definitely report it to support, because what you're seeing is *not* how it is supposed to work.

What Darkonex is saying is the case!!!! I bought the product a couple of weeks ago and had the same problems. I finally just uninstalled it and reinstalled it selecting not to associate any file types with the program, thinking this might solve the problem. Now the program freezes up everytime I click on an image. I got tired of messing with it and uninstalled it again. Next time I will download the trial version and just not buy without trying

Oh, I have no doubt that on some people systems, due to some sort of conflict with other software of bug in the installation route or who knows what reason, ACDSee may do this. i'm just saying it is *not* normal - this is *not* how the software is supposed to work, and not how it works for the vast majority of customers. If you happen to be experiencing this problem, I would recommend submitting a support ticket so the tehcnical staff at ACD can try to track down the problem.

I don't think it's a problem with our PC's it's probably a problem with the program and Vista I'm guessing. jkandel are you using Vista? I reinstalled it today to try the link that somebody posted on how to fix in File Associations which I had already tried but Vista file associations is different, there is no option in there to change the Drive association like it shows to do or anything like it. This really sux because I really want to use this program if I can find a way to change Explorer back to default shell in Vista. Any other takers?

I've just been searchin the net to try and fix this very problem. I've been using the same version of ACDsee for 5 years and it's always worked fine, I do the same type of install every time. It wasn't originlly ACDsee that took over as my file browser, it was a windows search update from microsoft that changed my settings by itself. I couldn't find any way to change the settings so I uninstalled this update. On uninstalling windows search, ACDsee took it's place. Strange though, as before hand ACDsee wasn't the default browser, Windows Explorer was!
I'm still trying to fix this problem so any ideas let me know?? Cheers

This is a very real problem with ACDSee Photo Manager 10! It's astonishing that they haven't resolved this installer bug yet!
I reported this problem to tech support 2 or 3 years ago. It may be a problem with earlier versions, but I didn't see it until v10. It's disheartening to know it's still present in v2009.
It took some tricky registry investigation and editing to fix this problem. What's worse, once you fix it, if you update the app with new patches and so forth, you're right back at square one and you have to go through all that pain all over again!
The ACDSee Photo Manager 10 installer inexplicably modifies the system registry entires for each and every drive on your system. It replaces the key values for what is called the "shell" from "explore.exe" to the ACDSee Photo Manager's .exe file, so that when you double-click any disk under "My Computer" (this is under XP Pro), it automatically launches ACDSee instead of explorer.exe. It was maddening!
ACDSee's tech support instructions to repair the damage can be found at the link belindap posted above: http://community.acdsee.com/forums/topic/double-clicking-a-folder-now-open-acdsee
And you will definitely need to perform the registry edits described there. The thing is, I recall that those instructions were not quite enough to fix it, and I had to do something in addition. Unfortunately, I can't recall what that was. It was tricky following those instructions, and I'm a programmer!
Good luck to you.

My OS is XP Pro and I have not encountered this problem with the trial version of either ACDSee Pro 2 or PM2009. My trusty v.7 does not cause the problem either. However ACDSee Autoplay runs without any request when I first power up an external drive but I assume I will find a way to turn this off when I can be bothered to look. I don't think it's always done it (but not sure) so maybe there is a connection.

Very strange that it seems to affect some people but not most of us. I'd definitely suggest that those affected contact customer support by clicking the Support link at top left of this page.
