View mode > Pan Lock doesn't work

  • Even with Pan and Zoom locks enabled (and the "Reset Zoom" option not selected), changing images does not show me the same part of the new image. The zoom level is retained, but I always get the top left hand corner of the new image. (This applies whether in Full Screen or not.)

Does Pan lock work for anyone else, and if so with what settings?

I also find that the relationship between the "Reset Zoom" option (Tools menu > Options >View Mode > Display) and Zoom Lock (Tools menu > Zoom) rather odd:

    (1) Both off = image zoom changes between images

    (2) "Reset Zoom" on / "Zoom Lock" off = as with (1)

    (3) "Reset Zoom" off / "Zoom Lock" on = zoom level retained between images

    (4) Both on = as with (3)

So "Zoom Lock" seems to override "Reset Zoom". Fair enough, but I find that once I've selected "Zoom Lock" I can't turn it off. However, if I toggle the "Reset Zoom" option that also turns "Zoom Lock" off.

This doesn't seem to make much sense to me. Does it work differently for (or make more sense to) anyone else?

If you always want your images to open scrolled to the same position (such as the top left corner), then you'll want to scroll to the top left corner and turn on the pan lock.  In this case if I open an image and scroll to the bottom, then flip to the next image, I'll be looking at the top left corner of the new image.

When the pan lock is off, the scroll position is maintained when flipping between images.  In this case if I open an image and scroll to the bottom, then flip to the next image, I'll be looking at the bottom of the new image.

Note that if your zoom setting is set to "Fit Image", then every time you open a new image you're going to be looking at the entire image.  The pan lock only really comes into effect when you have your zoom level set to "Actual Size", or something like that.

  • Tony, thanks for the feedback.

When I tried this out on my other computer I realised my mistake, because it did "remember" which part of the image I was looking at when I changed images. The difference was that Pan Lock was not "on" but "off". My mistake was in thinking that the idea of Pan Lock was to "remember" what part of the image you were looking just before you changed images (rather than, perhaps, centring the new image). In fact "Pan Lock" actually seems to "remember" the particular location when you invoke it, and then ignores any subsequent changes.

So this makes things easy. I just have to set Pan Lock to off, and then forget about it entirely. (I'm still not happy, though, that I can't turn "Zoom Lock" off without visiting the Options dialog, and don't see why this should be the case.)

What I AM happy with, is that when I hit the "/" key (to zoom to 100%), Beta2 zooms into the centre of the image (not the top left, as some previous versions including Beta1 did). So thanks for that.
