Use of / key in ACDSee 2.5 Build 358

Having used ACDSee products for many years I am used to browsing images by using fit to screen and then pressing the / key to zoom to the centre of the image at 1:1 ratio.

In 358 when I press / ACDsee zooms to the top left hand corner of the image. This is hardly useful since there is not often a critical part of the image hidden in the corner.

I have now gone back to version 335 which works as expected but have I missed a preference setting somewhere in 358 ?

  • I'm afraid I don't understand what ACD Systems are doing with Zoom and Pan in the Viewer.

As I understand it, after user complaints about Pan Lock, build 358 was supposed to fix the issue and restore v2 functionality with some enhancements. (At least that's what I remember one of the developers saying here on the forums.) However, I don't consider having 100% view showing the top left corner to be an enhancement.

I've also noticed that the option "Reset zoom to default on every image change" (found under Options > Viewer > Display) now appears to be flaky. (It used to work as expected.) With build 358 it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't, although it's tricky to work out just when. If I use "/" to zoom to 100% with images that are smaller than my screen (i.e. where I get a blank border), changing images doesn't restore my default zoom ("Fit image", with "Resize" set to "Reduce or Enlarge") when I change images, regardless of whether the "Reset" option is selected or not. But with other zoom setting, changing images does seem to reset to default if that option is selected.

So whatever was done to "fix" the previous problems seems to have broken something else, as I can't imagine why anyone would want things to work like this.

I've been using AcdSee since version 3.1 [ circa 2000 ]   The / key is known to my muscle memory.  Recent upgrade to Pro 2.5 left me wondering why I had to scroll around after that.  No time to search, until now... and all I find is confusion and invective.

    FYI, here's my workflow:

I have always set my AcdSee to 'fit image[to screen]', with 'shrink only'.  I flip through the images with page-up/page-down.  When I find a candidate, I hit '/' to get the full-resolution bits ( for detailed checking of focus, blur, etc ) *centered on the screen* [ which is usually a lot closer to the parts of the image I'm interested in checking than, say, the top-left of the image, or wherever the previous image was interesting ].  I'll pan around a bit with the arrow keys, then '*' to get back to 'fit screen', and resume the page-up/down scanning.

In Pro 2.5 I spend more time panning around than anything else.

Could someone from AcdSystems comment on when all this pan-lock / zoom-lock "/"-key interaction will be fixed?

    Thanks!

    Hi biffothebear and DaveCornelius,

here is the link to the discussion on the pan-lock issue mentioned by John Radcliffe. Tony, one of the developers, shares some information on how and why this feature works the way it currently does.

    http://community.acdsee.com/forums/topic/unable-to-disable-pan-lock/page/2#post-31191

Since - as I understand it - this is not considered a bug, there won't be a fix. Pan Lock is working this way by design.

If you want every image to open in the center of the image, scroll to the center of one image and turn on the pan lock.  From then on it will open every image in that position.

Ramei - Thanks for the link... but it doesn't work for me :-(

Tony - zoom ( "/" ), center, Pan Lock works.... sort of.  After I exited and restarted... it was back to top-left.  Others have complained about 'settings not sticking'... is this another of those?

And, in spite of the fact that I have Tools -> Options -> Viewer -> Display : "Reset zoom mode to default after every image change" checked... when I'm zoomed in ("/"), and hit Page Up/Down... I get the previous image, still zoomed in, when the 'default zoom' is: Fit Image ( and Reduce Only ).

So, (a) I can't follow the whole discussion to decide whether the 'features' are working as they should [ although, they certainly don't for me :-( ], and (b)  There are multiple bugs at play here.

I'll ask again: is AcdSystems going to explain all this?

[ btw: Help -> About AcdSee Pro 2.5 says:  Build 363 ... which is beyond what I see on the updates page? ]

    Thanks again...     /dc

    Dave,

yes, it's a dead link now. It did work when I posted it. Can't find the topic through forums search, either. Seems like the thread was removed.

    ???

    Ramei -

Maybe those 'permalinks' aren't quite permanent  :-)

Thanks for your help... I've moved along to a support ticket now... Perhaps I can get some answers that way...
