ACDSee Pro Photo Manager 2.5 Update

ACD Systems is committed to releasing regular updates to its products. This free update to ACDSee Pro 2.5 includes the following fixes:

    1. Database Conversion
The Properties pan now displays EXIF and IPTC tabs for selected images from converted databases.
    2. Database Backup
Photo disc thumbnails are now included in database backups.
    3. Embed feature compatibility with APD files
The Embed Database Information in Files feature no longer affects APD files. There is a compatibility issue between ACDSee Pro 2.5’s Embed Database Information in File feature and ACDSee Photo Editor’s APD format. APD files are now skipped when running Embed Database Information in Files. Full compatibility will be addressed in a future release.
    4. Image Viewing
      Image flickering has been resolved.

I was hoping that the update (build 335) would fix my metadata embed problem. It cannot even emebd on 1 file. ACDSee crashes right after the # files is displayed.

First - thanks for making this available!

I was wondering if this means already converted databases will work correctly now, or if one has to do the conversion with the new conversion to see the improvement.  I already did my conversion with the first 2.5 build, ran a catalog operation to work around the problem, and have been running with no real problems since.  I've installed the new build because I assume the other fixes may come in handy, but am wondering if I should reconvert my db in order to avoid future problems.  I have of course added to it since then, so it would be some work to get everything up to date, but I could do it if necessary.

Installed this latest patch but this new version still has a serious bug that causes it to immediately crash at startup (no ACDSee window appears at all) if run by any other Windows user other than the first Windows user.  The first user has even exitted ACDSee so there is no other instance running that could possibly interfere.

This problem I found was posted by at least one other user a week ago.

    http://community.acdsee.com/forums/topic/2nd-user-can39t-start-acdsee-25-build-333

This really really needs to be fixed because it worked fine in 2.0 version and there is no reason why ACDSee Pro 2.5 should crash on application startup.

    Hi all,

I'm still running ACDSee Pro 2.0, and am wondering if now is the time to "jump in" with 2.5.  I've been kind of waiting to see the first couple of rounds of bug fixes come out, which it seems like they have.

If I go for it, I will be upgrading my existing 2.0 install, and also installing 2.5 from scratch on a new laptop.

    Any advice appreciated!

    - Eric

p.s. I think the issue mentioned above about multiple users was addressed in another post -- the resolution was to delete a registry "hive" that was corrupt.

     Hello,

First, can you explain what you did to make 2.5 crash?

    What OS?

    ACDSee crashed , doing what?

  • yes i can...1) opening the program.  i get ding after ding after ding, stating acdsee has encountered and error and will close.

    2) trying my first scanning since installing it.  it repeatedly hung and had to be closed with task manager.  same scanner, same drivers, etc, so they are not to blame here.

    3) viewing short videos taken with a p&s camera - caused a blue screen of death today.

i think that is more than enough reason to go back to version 2.0.

don't get me wrong, i love acdsee, i use it constantly for everything!  i've been with it for years, but this update is not for me.

ACDSee Pro 2.5 (version 335) refuses any service (under Vista Home Premium, Intel Core Duo 6600 2.4Ghz, 2GB), be it when installed over version 2.0 or, after complete cleaning of the registry, as stand alone program!

ACDSee Pro 2.5 can't find ANY EXISTING database (message:database not accessible).

ACDSee Pro 2.0 has NEVER been a very stable piece of software, but these 2.5 upgrades (332,333,335) are a real DESASTER!

Will we have to wait for release 444 ???

By the way: the ACDSee 'Cleaning Tool' DOES NOT REMOVE ANY RECORD from the Registry !!!!

The only current solution is to go back to the unstable version 2.0

NB: my machine is in perfect software and hardware condition, no other program shows any problem!

    Addendum:

After 2.5 has said that no database is accessible. the program closes and can't be restarted without manually removing its record in the Windows Tak Manager (tag 'Processes').

  • well, i tried one more time this morning, and got it open...only to have it not be able to find any hard drives on my computer at all.

    that was it - i'm done with 2.5 - and have 2.0 re-installed.

thank goodness this was not a pay-for upgrade!!

For what is it worth (probably nothing to those who have problems) this have worked perfectly for me from version 3.3.5.

I am waiting for the next release of the RAW update to Nikon D90/700. The D90 was released two weeks ago and I expect this model to be included in the next RAW update together with the D700. Hopefully very soon.

It seems like this update is very dependent on the platform we are using. I am sitting on a Dell Laptop D620, an attached Sync Master 940, running on XP SP 3, been updating ACDSee Pro for several years and everything is working as expected. I have 20000+ pictures in the database and after rebuilding the thumbnails and metadata everything was fine.

Slideshow, organizing, editing, metadata and RAW processing works fine (except for D90/700 of course).

My experience with ACDSee pro is only positive, compared to the big brothers it is a bargain. I agree that this was not one of the best upgrades I have seen but it finally worked out and I believe someone is interested in that experience.

    Thank you Bjorn.

It is really good, to hear something positive about ACDSee.

As a long time user myself, my  experience with ACDSee is the same as yours.

BYW, How do you like the D90? I am going to check one out tomorrow.

The D90 is a killer and I am so pleased with this camera. You have probably read a lot of reviews by now and they are all praising this machine. And it's all true if you ask me.

I have the new AF-S 18-105/3.5-5.6 and it produces high quality pictures. I also have a MB-D80 battery grip and it gives a great balance to the camera and also a nice portrait grip.

    I can recommend the D90.

i updated to 2.5 recently and shortly after that a very annoying bug came up: when i start acdsee the main window pops up and then it freezes. but whats more annoying it lags and eventually freezes the computer. most of the time i have to reboot, because i cant even get the task manager open before everything freezes....

i tried removing and reinstalling, updating from 332 to 335, but nothing worked. every time one or more annoying reboots.

i've used acdsee for a long time, but i have to agree that it has never been a stable software. but it still was a good one. but now i'm searching for alternatives. i can't invest hour after hour trying to get acdsee to work, when i should work with some photos...

Anyone?  To be honest this was one reason I stopped using this software previously, its supposed to be pro software, yet updates for RAW simply do not come out quick enough.

I have just had to go through 2000 RAW images from a few shoots, using a new D700....sorry had to use lightroom, and pretty close to giving up really with ACDSEE.

I've been asking about the new Canon 50D.  Actually several people have.  You will not get an answer from ACDSee... feedback to customers is very poor.

This is not quite true but since there are several threads about 50D raw updates its not easy to stay up to date at the moment.

Here is the post from the 50D thread for your reference:

    Chippy: Hi all,

I have requested the next RAW update to include the 50D.There should be news about the 27th of this month, so just stay calm......and wait for the next RAW update.

    Thanks for your patience.

To be honest its pro software, it should be maintained...customers shouldnt have to ask for the support of new RAW files.  Adobe release them and tell the world about them, they dont wait to be moaned at to release the files.

I know that you obviously have to wait for the code to write the converters but this is harming your guys ability to pitch this software at pros....it was a long time until D300 RAW was supported IIRC
