Trial code and jumping through hoops

(4 posts)
  • I complained about having to register the beta versions on-line as I don't have an internet connection where I mainly use ACDSee. Now I find that to get the full 30-day trial period for the release version I also have to register on-line as otherwise I only get 7 days trial (at least a little more generous than the 3 days with the beta version).

Can anyone tell me why ACD Systems insists on making me lug my laptop to work just so I can register on-line?

Perhaps they just like their customers off (as with removing the choice of colour schemes and reassigning the Esc key).

So it's just as well that I like non-destructive Jpeg editing, isn't it? Otherwise (with issues like this and Pro3 still losing my selection EVERY TIME I sort after adding an image file) I'd just have walked away. So is that single feature worth £45? Ask me again in a few months time.

On you comment about us insisting you register online, no one ‘has to' register their product online. As with all software, there are benefits to regestering, including special offers for registered users (like the Pro 3 one) and access customer support.
I recommend killing two birds with one stone and doing it when you're getting online to join us on the forums.

Sure, I don't have to register on-line, if I'm happy with a 7-day trial period. Perhaps you'd be kind enough to explain just what benefits I would get from using a registered trial version as against an unregistered one. (I really would be interested in finding out, because it's far from clear to me.)

    This is a joke, right?

The computer I'm typing this comment on doesn't have a copy of Pro3 on it (I'd run a copy on it if I could, but that option was removed when you jettisoned Win2k users with v2.5). So personally I don't see how your "recommendation" would work.

The truth is that not everyone has the luxury of cheap internet access. I have a very limited choice of providers, and personally I prefer to keep my arm and leg for other purposes rather using them to pay exorbitant internet access charges. And yes, when it comes down to it, I'd rather use my money to upgrade ACDSee Pro to v3 rather than pay for two month's internet access.
