Thumbs Display in File List

I transfer files from camera (5D HiQ JPEG) to PC using SanDisk Extreme memory card an reader via Firewire 800. It's fast! As the photo shoot progresses we periodically view the captures in PM9. I use PM9 to copy files to be retouched (in PS CS3) into a new folder.

I am noticing that the thumbs in File Viewer for the image files have a black bar along both sides of the long dimension of the thumb and that the thumb image is distorted (compressed) as though pushed in by the black bars. After retouching the image files in the new folder the black bars are gone.

Any idea what's happening? I've scoured the KB, FAQs and Forums and haven't seen mention of this. The distorted thumbs with the black bars is annoying to me and unsettling to the model who is reviewing the photos with me.

    Thanks, - Dave

    Dave,

I had a similar problem with an old Fujifilm camera. That produced photos that were 1800x1200 pixels, which results in black lines at the top and bottom of the photo in the PM9 viewer. Photos taken at 640x480 (this was 7-years ago!) don't have the problem. I therefore summise that the black 'zones' are simply photos of non-standard aspect ratios, and PM9 fills up the space with black to get the correct ratio thumbnail. My photos aren't compressed in any direction though.

Have you tried taking photos at other sizes / aspect ratios?

    Hi Ian,

The black bars disappear after I retouch the image in Photoshop. No, I haven't tried shooting in different aspect ratios. My camera shoots the aspect ratio of a 35mm frame, 2:3. I'm kind of stuck with that.

    Thanks, - Dave

Hi Dave - What is your camera make/model? There are some known issues similar to what you describe, related to displaying embedded JPGs, depending on the camera model.

One suggested workaround for now, which will also speed up your viewing is to generate RIPs for your images. To do this, select the images in the Browser and choose Database | Generate RAW Image Previews.

    Hope that helps!
