I guess I'm going to have to accept the fact that ACDSee 3's handling of categories has gone downhill - you can't see what categories are assigned to an image unless you open all the subcategories to see which ones are ticked. I can see that it does most of what Lightroom does very well, but its a real shame that this basic function has been neglected so badly. For me the main strength of ACDSee was assigning categories to my entire image collection; including emf, wmf, pdf etc. It doesn't even preview ai (illustrator) files. In all ACDsee had jumped ship to the amateur/semi-pro photography market. I can understand why, but it didn't have to ditch the cataloguing features, and now its even getting left behind by Picassa in that area.

To see to which categories an image/file is assigned use the properties pane and the database tab. About half way down you'll see Organize: underneath which are the categories to which the image is assigned. Can't help you with previewing illustrator files - sorry.

As already mentioned several times, I'm also very unhappy with the fact that as part of the user interface "improvements" :-( the indicator whether an image is assigned to a subcategory got removed in the organizer pane.
Needing to go to the properties pane instead is not really an alternative.

Just curious - why is looking at the Properties window instead not an alternative? I actually have that Window open constantly, as it is the basic way to see *all* information about an image (keywords, ratings, notes, EXIF, IPTC, etc), not just categories. I have Organize set up on auto-hide as really, it's only special function is to choose different group of images to display - it doesn't provide any additional value that I can see over Properties while looking at any given group of images.
