The idea is that header and footer would have 3 states, on or off (as at present) plus timed. So one could be set to appear for, say, 2 or 3 seconds when the image first appears. Then after the timed interval it would disappear to leave the "clean" image.
I'd like it to be available in the Viewer (as well as in slideshows), and when I'm using manual advance (not just auto). Once the caption had disappeared I'd suggest that selecting Previous using the mouse wheel and/or a keystroke would first restore the caption, and it a further Back command would be needed to actually go back to the previous image.
