I'm seeing the occassional thumnail with a small blue square with a white D inside in at the bottom of the thumbnail in 3.0. I don't remember seeing this in 2.5. Does anyone have any idea what this indicates?

    Thanks

The little white D in a blue background means that the image has been "developed". Maybe because you processed it?

At some point you may also see a white E in a green background indicating an image that has been edited. You may also see both meaning you have developed and edited an image.

And the reaosn it's important to know whcih files have been Developed and Edited is that these are the files that can be restored to the original verion if you like.  Or, in the case of Developed files, it means you can access all the Develop mode settings at any time, including copying them to other files, or going back into Develop mdoes to continue processing right where you left off.

when a photo is 'developed' and 'edited' is the RESULT saved somewhere, or are basically the edits stored in the database and the original remains are the only file on disk?

The developed and edited images remain wherever you processed them. In the case of non-raw images the originals are stored in a hidden sub-folder called [Originals]. See the following thread for an excellent explanation of how this can be used in practce. http://community.acdsee.com/forums/topic/report-on-originals-test-results-and-workflow-options#post-44446
