Slow File & Folder Operations

ACD databases are stored on a local drive on a Vista machine. Images located on a server connected via 1Gbps network connection, XP-based dedicated RAID 5 server.

Problem: Often ACDSee Pro 2 will take a very long time to contemplate and/or process trivial file operations with drag & drop, e.g. "move 50 images to another folder." Symptoms like dragging the files to a folder, and during the drag process the app hangs for two or three minutes.

This is extremely frustrating and damaging to my productivity.

What should I do to fix it?

There could be a number of reasons for this poor performance. And a lot of them nothing to do with ACDSee. What are the size of the files you are trying to copy? If you use your regular Windows Vista system, outside of ACDSee, to do a drag and drop do you also get poor performance or is it much beter?

7-12MB D200 NEF files. But that's irrelevant, as a file move operation doesn't involve moving file data, just relinking directory entries. When it works in ACDSee, it's nearly instantaneous. When it's broken in ACDSee, it takes many seconds to even acknowledge my drop. When it is broken, navigating into other directories also takes a long time.

I never get poor performance in other applications or in explorer.

There is a rather infamous bug in Vista that causes slow file operations "sometimes", and I'm betting that is what you are seeing. As I recall, there have been patches to vista to fix the problem, but it still persists in some cases. See the following:

    http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/08/24/s...m-in-vista-fix/

Google may yield other relevant sites with info.

Note of course ACDSee *does* add it's own wrinkle to move operations, as it has to update the db info for each file to reflect the change, But that is normally very quick - moving a bunch of files normally does not take noticeably longer in ACDSee than in Explorer.

If you're working purely on a local system then you may well be right that there is no actual data move being undertaken, just a change in directory entries. However, as you are actually working on a networked system things are going to be somewhat more complicated. A good way to see if large amounts of data are actually moving across the network is to use the Windows task manager network tab. This will show a huge amount of activity if data is moving from the XP box to your Vista box before being placed back onto the XP box. If however the activity is low then all the work will be being undertaken on the XP box. The former will indicate you need to optomise performance on the network and the latter will indicate a potential problem on the XP box.
