Share keywords and categories of files

    Hi!

Today I've been trying and trying to get this right. In short: I want to send pictures to my desktop computer from my notebook, along with ALL ACD Database tags including keywords and categories. I think I tried about everything but I can't get it to work. It seems that the embed option only embeds the caption and notes, so that's not an option. And exporting a part of the database also doesn't work, because the files are in another path on my desktop. Does anyone how to do this?

A little background info: I run ACDSee Pro 2.5 on both my computers, but I do not want all images on both (due to disk space limitations). So I am looking for a way to copy a set of images and/or folders to my desktop computer along with their info.

Thanks in advance for any tips and suggestions!

Embed WILL put in your categories.  So embed your files with the information.  Move your files to other computer.

Run the catalog wizard on the files you moved and this should bring back the ACDSee information that was embedded.

And note that running catalog on the files is the key.  Apparently, ACDSee does read in caption and notes just by visitng the files, but to get keywords and categories, you need to explicitly cataog them.  As I understand it, this was so that browsing around files you received from other sources didn't start sticking them in your category hierarchy automatically.  Makes sense when you think about it.

... and that works very well indeed! Cataloging the files was the key, as you both wrote. And that does make sense, as Marc indicated. Thank you both very much (after much frustration and confusion this enhances my view on ACDSee Pro 2.5 a lot)!

But I must say, it's strange that I didn't come across anything like that while browsing the help index for half an hour... Oh well, I probably just overlooked it.

Don't think you did.  To my knowledge 2.5 is the first version in which catting files performs a different operation to browsing a folder.  It's not in the help files

Wow, that worked but yeah, not an obvious step you need to take.  Also, it has tags now onthe laptop but not the same tags it has here on the desktop.  I'm a little puzzled with that.   Going to try again with another kit and see what happens...will do a fresh backup and optimize first since I haven't backed up since the upgrade.  I'll report back as soon as I figure something out.
