Ready-made category trees?

Instead of adding categories one at a time, it would be conveninent if you just could import a category tree that someone else made. Is that possible in ACDSee? I think it can be done in Imatch, where kid people also have made such category trees available to others. Like for instance if you like me take lots of photos of plants and you want to put them into categories built upon sientific names of genus and species. Others might want to keep track of different dogs or cat races or birds for that matter. Is there something like that going on in the ACDSee community?

There is and it can be done.

The community doing it is for digtal scrapbooking with ACDSee, Organizing Styles

How to create your category file for others:

    1. To create a file, choose Tools | Database | Export | Database.
    2. On the options, choose Export database info to a text file and then choose the last box (include all category defitions.)

This will create a text file containing only your categories that anyone can import into the SAME VERSION of another ACDSee.

    Hi Heidi,

Nice to hear that it is possible. What I also would like to know is if you can edit such a category list in, say Excel, and then export it to a format that can be brought into ACDSee? I mean if i can't find what I need, I might have to glean bits and pieces from here and there and bring them together in a document and then finally, bring it into ACDSee.

If it is not possible to edit the lists outside of ACDSee, then I it is not worth that much because it means someone has to sit and type everything into ACDSee.

Like I sait, what I need is a list of sientific names of plants and I surely can get hold of such a list somewhere. Then if I could compile the list in the way I want it, in an external application, asy Excel or just a text editor, by means of tabs, then I could easily drag, drop and paste components, until I am satisfied.

Do you think anything like I outline here is possible too?

The database file is written in XML format.  So you would need a special tool to create your own lists.  I have hand edited a few in a text editor (mostly just deletions) and a I have written a tool to create a nicely formatted html list to use on the website.    But the XML format doesn't lend itself to what you want to do.

OK, so I need an XML-editor then. I think Corel Ventura does that, and I happen to have that piece of software. What about MS Word? Well, I'm sure there are some XML-savvy text editors out there.

Do you happen to know the name of the file that contains the categories? I'd like to take a look at it (a copy :-) and see what I can do with it.
