RAW processing and temperature

Hi, I have some DNG (Pentax K200D) files and when I go to RAW processing and Color tab, I often see that the temperature numbers are in some way "incorrect". In one case I got 40000 K! but the picture itself looks OK. I have tried other software like Capture One, LightZone, Raw Therapee and the temperature was OK - about 5700-6200 K but in ACDSee Pro 2.5 it is about 9000, 12000 and so on (or 40000 as I mentioned above) - too high.

Hmm. This is with 2.5?  I have a K200D too and for a while was shooting DNG, and never saw anything like that.  However, I *did* see this with my *istDS using Pro 1.  Same behavior - picture actually looked fine, but the "As Shot" WB was a completely bogus number.  My understanding is that the DNg format doesn't actually record the temperature and tint values as numbers, but rather, as whole sets of numbers representing something or other that requires a fairly complex calculation to then turn into temperature and tint values.  This calculation was broken for the DS on Pro 1 but fixed on Pro 2.  So I'm guessing something like that might be going on here, too. Except that as I said, I haven't seen it.

Does this happen with all DNG files you have from the K200D, or just some?  Are these DNG straight from camera, or converted from PEF?  Converted by the Pentax software, or by the Adobe converter?  I believe DNG files from the Pentax software have given ACDSee problems before.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, it's the latest ACDSee Pro 2.5, white balance set on "As Shot" and these DNG files are straight from my camera. I was shooting in RAW+ (DNG+JPEG). It seems that for every DNG file (I have roughly 15 of them) is the temperature number a bit higher or too much high. For example 9000 instead of 5000-6000, some give me 20000 and some extremes even 45000. But the pictures look absolutely fine, no color shift or something. I can upload one example file if it'd be useful.

I was looking for some photo manager with RAW convertor and I was almost decided to settle with ACDSee but suddenly this... :)

I don't know about the As Shot problems but it does seem weird to have the option to push color temperature to 50.000...

If anyone is interested I uploaded one DNG file that gives me 45000 K.

I have confirmed - the "As Shot" WB in the posted file is completely bonkers!  You should definitely report this with a support ticket..

FWIW, if you shoot PEF then convert to DNG using the free Adobe DNG Converter, you get the advantage of compression on the card to save room while shooting, as well as on your hard drive.  And the images come out with the right WB.

    Max,

You're right - there is a problem displaying the correct white balance for Pentax K200D DNG files. I'll try and have this fixed for our next RAW Update.

Thank you for the info. The problem is that I want to avoid such conversions because some RAW converters don't work with converted DNG files, only with the native ones (support them "fully", respectively). It's the case for example with Bibble software (this thread for instance). So for compatibility I'm trying to give my hands away from modifications. :)
