Problem with assigning a hotkey to "Crop"

I've assigned the "x" key to crop photos.  It works fine, but I lose all toolbars and everything when I do the following:

    1. Double click the photo to change.

    2. Click the "Edit Image" button.

    3. Type "x" to crop the image (don't click crop, you have to use your hotkey)

    4. Crop and click "Done"

    5. Enjoy having no toolbars or other controls available.  I have to click "ESC" at this point and either save or discard changes.

Does anyone else have this problem?  It doesn't happen if I do it from the viewing screen, just from the edit screen.

Now this is strange - now when I double click to view a file I no longer have a toolbar along the top or side...it's just the picture.  I wonder what happened to it?  (I miss having quick "edit" tools in the viewing mode).  Am I going crazy?  (don't answer that)

And while right-clicking while viewing an image brings up a menu, there's no "View-Customize" to allow me to show toolbars, customize hotkeys, etc.  So I can't even reassign my "x" for crop now.  Odd and odder.

Well, when it disappears in image viewing mode I can get the main toolbar back by clicking ctrl-shift-t, so that's a little better.  But the editing tasks toolbar won't stay on even after turning it back on.

You probably exited the viewer when at 'Full Screen'  and that is how it opens now. Type F, which toggles the full screen mode.

No, it's not full screen mode, because I still have the window controls (the little red x) in the upper right corner.  Pushing F makes that go away and come back, but the menus and toolbars all go away.  I have to turn them back on with the keyboard shortcuts every time.

I must admit I am lost then. Sorry.
