Pro 2.5 and FotoSlate 4.0 Question/Problem

    Issues:

    1. Fotoslate <time stamp> metadata tag points to the computer file modified date/time instead of the EXIF date/time original (when the photo was taken). This means we have to use Batch Adjust Time Stamp in Pro 2.5 for all the images after we've added the image description (adjust the computer file modified date/time to be the EXIF date/time original). After the Batch Adjust Time Stamp is done, the data in the image description fields is lost.

    2. Pro 2.5 - entering the image description in either the EXIF image description or the IPTC caption fields does not save, it reverts to OLYMPUS STYLUS, it sometimes does this even if the Batch Adjust Time Stamp isn't performed.  ?

This problem seems to be isolated to the images taken with Olympus cameras. The other cameras' images (Pentax, Nikon, Konica, and Sony) do not have this issue.

Unfortunately, I don't have time to deal with ACDSee's tech support today, there isn't a phone number readily available to talk to a person.  I posted to the Pro 2.5 forum and hopefully someone will resolve the issue or at least provide a solution so we can get the photos into PDF for the report.

If someone knows a fix for this, please post.  Also, if someone knows EXACTLY what the metadata tags in FotoSlate are pointing to, that information would be VERY helpful.

I can't help with Fotoslate, but with EXIF in general, I think you are seeing a result of the XMP folks' decision (extremely ill-considered IMHO) to have EXIF Image Description and IPTC Caption both map to the same XMP fields.  So if a file has an XMP block, writes to one of those fields will overwrite the other, with all sorts of annoyingly unexpected side effects.  I'm not exactly sure how you're trying to write to the field - typing in Properties or using Batch Set Information - but in general, I find using Batch Set Information and writing the value to both fields at once does the trick.  So I type all my captions into the database first, then run Batch Set Information at the end of the day to copy all my database captions to IPTC & EXIF together (also writing out my notes, keywords, & rating to IPTC).

I believe you should have gotten a fix from Support already but just in case, here is their recommendation.

Indeed, we recommend to use 'IPTC: caption' over 'EXIF: Image Description' to comply with the 'XMP/IPTC/EXIF' specification. Essentially 'IPTC: caption', 'EXIF: Image Description' and 'XMP: Description' are overlapping fields, hence ideally they shall be the same. However, to keep backward compatibility, as far as I know no applications have yet enforced that rule and we do not expect that change in the near future. If you would like to elaborate more about this topic, we can discuss in a new ticket. For now, let us focus on how to resolve the workflow issue you have encountered.

I've just tested the following steps and it appears to be working - no empty or double entries. Therefore, I would like that you try those steps at your end and let us know the result:

    1) EXIF: 'Image Description'

    - In ACDSee Pro 2.5, select the images that you have already entered the 'IPTC: Description'
    - Click Tools | Batch Set Information
    - Click the EXIF Tab, and click the 'right arrow' above the 'Image Description: ' field, and then select 'Insert Metadata'. In the 'Choose Properties' window, check 'IPTC: Caption'. Click OK
    - In the 'Image Description' field, <IPTC:Caption> shall appear (see attached screenshot)
    - Click 'Perform Set information' to complete task
    - Select those images and then click 'Create | FotoSlate 4'
    - In FotoSlate 4, from the 'Text Object Properties', try 'Insert Metadata' > Image Description

    * Note, because Fotoslate 4 does not support IPTC metadata, we will have to use 'EXIF: Image Description'. Running the 'Batch Set Information' will allow us to copy the IPTC:Caption (already entered manually) to 'EXIF: Image Description'. At the same time, all three overlapping fields are synchronized.

    2) Time Stamp

In Fotoslate 4, you can use 'Insert Metadata' to add 'Image Data' and 'Image Time', both of which correspond to the 'EXIF: Data/Time Original' ( the data and time when picture was taken). In the Text Preview Area, you shall see <FileDate> <FileName>
