Printing aRGB with Epson R2880

    Hi all,

I just got the above-mentioned printer today and have only made one print yet. It looks good, but perhaps a bit oversaturated. Anyway, I have started to shoot in Adobe RGB lately and don't have much experience printing those images.

I always embed ICC profile in my images now, at transfer time. In the ACDSee print dialog / Color Management tab, there is this checkbox to use embedded profiles when found in image. But, ion the Epson Driver, there is also a place where you can choose between sRGB and aRGB, so I selected aRGB. Will that make for some sort of double correction or is this the way? I suppose I can get rid of the over saturation if I make an ICC profile for the printer and paper combination.

I strongly suggest you do not use Acdsee Pro 3 for printing as its colour management in this department is abysmal compared to something like Elements or Lightroom.

I fear you are correct. It seems that ACDSee doesn't do what it promises in the printing department. I made some test prints where I compared the output from PSCS2 with ACDSee. The results should have been similar, but they were not even close. While the PS output was almost there, the ACDSee prints were far, far out when ACDSee handled the colors. If I set the CM in the printer driver, the results were as good as PS.

The test image had an embedded aRGB profile, and  it didn't matter whether I selected it in ACDSee CM or not. I have checked the box saying to use embedded profiles, but apparently it does not do that in printing. Om screen it looks fine and seems to honour the embedded profile, but the print output is very dull.

ACDSee seems to have a big problem here, and the help file tells you precious little. It would be appreciated if ACDSee could step forward and release something more in-depth on printing, OR make the necessary corrections if we are dealing with bugs here. I just bought the app, and it seems broken already from the start. Do I have to resort to another application for printing? Well, at the moment it seems so, or I will let the printer driver take care of the CM. Epson also have released some printing utilities that might be usable, I will take a look at that.

Yes that was the result of my tests with it and hence my post.

I do have to say though that with a calibrated my monitor and letting Lightroom/ CS3 or Elements 6 manage the the printing I get a perfect  match beteween my monitor and Epson Photo R285 (including black and white which is unusal for a cheap colour printer) , are you disabling the printer colour managment in the epson dialogue box when using CS2 and are you also selecting the Epson paper profile in CS2's printer profile box?

    >>OK. I just wanted to describe my results. Then we are two.

    >>I calibrate my monitor with a Spyder. Perhaps the monitor (Sony LCD) is getting a bit old, but the luminance is still around 115 cd/m2. The result when printing from PSCS2 is almost accurate, but a just a bit oversaturated, compared to the screen. And yes, I have also disabled CM in the printer driver and let PS take care of the CM, with the same result as when I selected aRGB in the printer driver too. Yes, the paper profile is chosen in the printer driver.

I want to add that the print results are acceptable already from the start, when printing from PS, it's just a matter of fine-tuning, whereas printing from ACDSee is completely off target.

Hi Paul and others interseted in this subject.

I actually found a way to get the printing to function in ACDSee pro 3. In the Epson R2880 (and I presume other Epson printers as well) driver, the Utility tab/ Speed and progress, there is one option that you should check, namely "Allow applications to perform ICM color matching". When you do that ACDSee takes control and you must turn off the color management in the printer driver, or there will be double corrections with very much oversaturated colors.

The strange thing is that Photoshop can take control without this box being checked, but at least now I know how it works, and I can choose how I want to do it. I'm glad I sorted this one out.
