Pentax K-7 DNG incompatibility

    Hi,

ACDSee doesn't treat DNGs from the K-7 nicely:

    • Thumbnail is black
    • but preview image in Manage is OK
    • yet the image in Process mode is black!

So currently ACDSee is unusable with the K-7 (at least with DNGs. I don't have PEF files to test).

    Best,

Bummer. What about if you run those files through the Adobe DNG Converter?  I seem to recall ACDSee having similar issues the in-camera DNG or PPL-converted DNG files from previous Pentax models.  I think there's also a discussion of issues with the K-7 DNG files in other applications in the PP forum over on pentaxforums.com - something about DNG being a "nonstandard standard".  Whatever it is about Pentax-generated DNG that confuses ACDSee, it seems to confuse some other programs too.

Sorry Marc, I don't own the K-7 (yet?) and didn't install Adobe's DNG converter. The DNGs I tried were some files posted at the DPR forum by a K-7 user (in one of the endless high-ISO comparison threads).

The only other application I have is Raw Therapee, whose RAW decoding engine, like ACDSee, is based on DCRAW. RT did manage to open the DNG files and process them, though there was one oddity where a vertical strip containing garbage appears to the right of the image. This looks to me like a bug in the DNG, reporting the wrong image width to the DNG parser, or something like that.

I guess time will tell with more feedback and with ACDSee's developers (as well as Dave Coffin) checking some K-7 DNGs. I just want to make sure they know about this and check it out.

Well, you could notify the developers via posting a ticket.

As for Pentax in camera DNG files, while they do comply with the DNG standard, they don't implement it fully and are not 100% compatible with Adobe. It's been like this since K10d.
