I am considering JPEG2000 to compress very large 16 bit TIF files (115 MB).
These are high quality scans from a Nikon 4000ED. The files are too big to keep, so JPEG2000 seems a possible solution.
What is the best compression factor for archiving purposes?
I've tested the following: lossless (files size about 74MB, i.e. still too big), 10x compression, 20x, 50x, 100x, 200x and 1000 times. After converting back to TIFF and comparing the compressed photo and the original I find to my surprise that there are no visible differences when viewing at 100% magnification with compression factors of up to 100x.
This seems to good to be true?!
Who has any experinece with this and can give some advice?
many thanks, Edwin
