Nikon NEF Raw file processing issues

    I am testing Pro 3 following good reviews. After one weeks use I believe it has the potential to be a fantastic "one stop" organiser / editing programme. However, as an editing programme for NEF raw images it cannot be compared to Capture NX2 and until the issue of image shift when going from View to Process modes is solved I will not make the switch ( I have a D700). This is a pity since, in terms of speed and functionality, Pro 3 is light years ahead of NX2.

    For the moment though, I am prepared to sacrifice speed and functionality in return for the more accurate  image rendition of my images via NX2.

    The "problem" of processing NEF images in Pro 3 has been reported elsewhere in this forum. Is anything being done within the marble halls of ACDSee to rectify this problem ? If not, I fear they will lose a large potential market.

    I think you'll need to be more specific about what problem you are referring to.  It's certainly normal for *any* raw processing program to generate slightly different results than the JPEG than the camera would have displayed - and View mode is simply displaying that JPEG.  Thisis just the nature of raw - different programs will render raw data differently.  And in the case of Nikon in particular, certain features like active d-lighting cannot be emualted by programs other Nikon's own software - those are proprietary algorithms.  So while there are lots of people reporting such differences, that isn't a problem - it's just normal to expect some variation between output from different programs when you shoot raw.

    If you're referring to a *specific camera model* in which you believe the colors are outside the "normal" range of what differences one should expect between different raw processing programs, you might want to specify what camera you are referring to, and make sure you report the issue to support (via the link at top left of this page).  I do vaguely recall one particular Nikon model for which the colors or exposure seemed off by more than the expected amount.  And I have no idea what the status of that is, but hopefully anyone seeing a real problem - not just normal variation - has reported it to support.  But as for losing a large potential market, it just isn't the case that ACDSee in general is doing anything wrong with all NEF files.

    Dear Marc

    Many thanks for your informative and constructive comments which are much appreciated. What I am referring to is the "darkening" of the image when you go from View to Process especially when the RAW display settings are set to "Speed". The difference between the embedded JPEG and the RAW are more than I have come to expect, not only when compared NX2, but also when compared with DXO Optics Pro and Adobe. This difference was also reported in the forum by a Nikon D90 user. I shoot with a D700 and the "problem" appears similar.

    Point taken about D Lighting and propriety algorithms and I will switch off the D Lighting to see if it makes a difference. I am more than happy to give Pro 3 every chance because everything else is so go
