Migration of data across computers, program versions etc

I hope this questions isn't out of line or too obvious.  I'm now looking for some sort of photo organizer, after being stupefied to learn that the program I've used for a few years apparently doesn't maintain organizing info I've entered (tags) if I upgrade to a later version, or, especially in the context that the issue came up, if I want to move my photos to my new computer, with a newer operating system, preferably with a newer version of the photo organizing software.

So, my question, does ACDSee enable this sort of migration, while maintaining whatever data has been entered?  If so, can you direct me to specific instructions, details on this sort of thing?  Thanks in advance

    Hi whynot2!

I am guessing that you are asking if PM maintains its database for each successive version? For example, I just upgraded from PM 10 to 2009. All of my information that I had entered in PM 10 automatically transfers into 2009- nothing is lost. I didn't pay much attention when the wizard came up, but it should be available in the program under Database | Convert Database.

If you have a different program, such as Picasa or PSE organizer and want to transfer that data into PM, you can do that too- You can read how here:

Adobe PE Organizer or Picassa or DIS 2006 to ACDSee Photo Manager: A way to transfer your digital kits from a previous organizer to ACDSee and lose as little as possible.

    HTH!

That is definitely 1 part of a 2 parter.  The other part...can the tag info be maintained across a computer migration?  For example, if I had, say PM 7 (if there was one) on my old XP machine, and I wanted PM 2009 on my new Vista machine, and had an external hd available, would I be able to maintain and organization and tags when I moved the images from old machine to new machine?

It can be.  Traditionally, ACDSee kept all this info in a database, so moving to a new computer meant either copying database over alng with your pictures, then possible running some commands to tell ACDSee where your pictures are on the new machine if the location changed form where they wereon the old machine.

Starting with the Pro 2.5, and also with 2009 version of ACDSee, it is now possible to embed your db info directly into the files.  Meaning that when you move to new computer, the db info definitely comes over if the pictures do.

For example, if I had, say PM 7 (if there was one) on my old XP machine, and I wanted PM 2009 on my new Vista machine, and had an external hd available, would I be able to maintain and organization and tags when I moved the images from old machine to new machine?

See above.  If you start with PM 2009, then this is pretty automatic.  But if you really do need to move from PM 7 to PM 2009 while moving from an XP machine to a Vista machine, it might take a bit of additional work (a utility under the Database menu called Database Maintenance).

Actually, I think any database migration from xp to vista in any version prior to PM2009/Pro2.5 is best done using the Database|Export|Database then on the Vista computer Database|Import|Database.   (Use the 'Export entire ACDSee database to a read-only, compressed version' option.)  HTH!
