    From Microsoft:
    Overview
Microsoft Photo Info allows photographers to add, change and delete common "metadata" properties for digital photographs from inside Windows Explorer.

When installed, a new "Photo Info" item appears on the context menu for files selected in Windows Explorer. To use, simply select one or more image fiiles, right-click and choose "Photo Info" to open the Photo Info properties editor. You can edit metadata for files individually, or all together as a batch. Photo Info reads and writes metadata in IPTC and XMP formats (depending on file type). It also provides enhanced "hover tips" and additional sort properties for digital photographs in Windows Explorer.

Microsoft Photo Info runs on 32-bit versions of Windows XP (with Service Pack 2 or later) and the Windows Vista operating systems.

    You must install Genuine Advantage to D/L this file. </forums.acdsystems.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" /> </forums.acdsystems.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

    Worth a look.

Vista does allow you to alter some Metadata via the 'Details Pane' in a folder window, without any 'add-ons'.

    Same level/amount of detail?
I am about to re-build computer and hesitating on whether or not to jump straight in with fresh install of Vista.
    Foolish at this stage?

Admittedly only key OS defined fields are available in the Details Pane, but it is about as convenient as you can get - click on a file and then alter its Metadata in the same window !!

Re Vista install, hhhhhmmm (obvious question is what ver - Ultimate Home Pro etc), I've been running Ultimate (build 6000) since late Nov 06 without any significant issues but I guess it depends on your application set. The only apps I cannot use which I previously used under XP are :

    - ACDSee (well it works, save crashing 1 in 4 times on its startup)

    - McAfee 2007 Sec Suite (I've replaced the AV element of the suite with McAfee Enterprise 8.5)

    - Diskeeper 11 Pro

Note that my application set does not include PS CS2 (or CS3) or any MS Office version below 2007.

    Hope that helps.

ps When you start to use Windows Photo Gallery your jaw will drop </forums.acdsystems.com/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":o" border="0" alt="ohmy.gif" />
