You can customize these and most commands via view->toolbars->customize->keyboard.  I hate three-character sequences, and prefer just one for the things I use a lot like this.  However, "E" appears to be at least partially hardwired to toggle exposure warnings while in View mode.  I have my "E" key customized to go directly to edit, but if I'm View mode, it first toggles the exposure warnings, and then if I hold it long enough, it eventually sends me to Edit mode.  I'm too old and set in my ways to change to a different shortcut, so I live with this.  That's also why I use "R" instead of "D" for Develop - because "R" was what I used for RAW Processing in previous versions, and that's basically what turned into Develop mode.

BTW, there are actually separate shortcuts - both sets customized in the same manner, but totally separately - for Manage versus View mode.  So you can, if you wish, have the same key do something different depending on what mode you are in.  But if you want it to do the same in both modes, you have to customize it separately in both modes.
