I finally managed to get my digital scrapbooking supplies embedded and tried to open an APD file of a layout in Photo Editor 2008 and NOTHING OPENS! Picture me hyperventilating over here! Every single APD give me the same error messages...first I get "The file's digital signature is not valid. Do you with to continue?" and if I click Yes I get Error loading document. It gives the file path then says "(Invalid file header.)" W...T...#! Somebody tell me there is a way to remove the stinkin' sidecars so I can get back to work! PLEASE!

I don't give a rat's fuzzy behind about getting Pro 2.5 to work anymore. Just let me get Photo Editor working with my APD's again! AAAArrrrrggggghhhhhh!

Is there a reaosn you think sidecars are connected? You can certainly delete them if them are causing problems for Photo Editor. And then turn off the option in ACDSee to create the sidecars in the first palce (under Tools->Options->Database).

Or maybe ACDSee actually embedded info in the files - not using sidecars - and this is causing problems? If you go to Advanced Filter options (Alt-I) and turn on the option to display XMP files, do you actually see sidecars?

OK, three days ago I had no issues with Photo Editor or APD files. I finally got my digital artwork database info embedded, and not one single APD on my computer will open. Not the templates, not my layouts...nothing saved before embedding. I can create a new one and it works fine. This is the only change I've made to any software or to any files. You tell me what else it could be? I followed your instructions but cannot identify anything as a sidecar...not sure what it's supposed to look like. I've examined the properties tabs looking for info, checked all the icons on my thumbnails...no idea if the embedding is in the file or in a sidecar. I'm a digital scrapbooker and pretty proficient at using the organization tools in ACDSee but not quite as technically literate in the finer details. I don't own a DSLR and have never played with any RAW files or processing. But I think I'm fairly competent at diagnosing and fixing most of my computer's technical issues...both hardware and software!

I'm about to uninstall Pro 2.5 and delete my entire Digital Artwork folder so I can restore from my backup EHD but all the work I've done since my last sync is probably lost. I was hoping to find a way to salvage my layouts! If I'm choosing between Pro 2.5 or Photo Editor, I choose the Editor. I can organize in PM10 just fine!

    Hi Kristi

I just ran a quick test...

Opened two small test .apds in Photo Editor and they worked fine.
    In pro 2.5
Made some notes on the apd files.
    Closed & Embedded files
Both opened in ACDSee Photo Editor. Worked fine.
Returned to pro 2.5 Interesting enough my notes were gone. ???? That shouldn't have happened.. Not the problem I am looking at though.
So I added Author & Assigned the two apds to a category.
    Embedded the information
Tried to open them both ACDSee Photo Editor and both errored with "The file's digital signature is not valid. Do you with to continue?"
I then went back 2.5 and cleared all Notes, Author & Assigned Categories, reembedded that information.
Tried to open them both in ACDSee Photo Editor and both still errored with same file.
I don't think there will be any sidecars. The embedded information is stored in the XMP in the tif file (apds are a version of a tif.) So since this XMP info is embedded in the layouts, you would have to a) edit the raw file in a code editor to remove the XMP -- if possible and may or may not work or  revert back to your backup apd files.

So it looks like either embedding the Author or Category corrupts the APD and makes it unopenable.

Please submit a support ticket on this.

Thanks for testing this out Heidi. At least I'm not crazy...just a bit behind!

Just goes to show, no matter how often you backup, you are never truly safe!

    Dear ACDSee Photo Editor User,

We have identified a compatibility issue with the ACDSee Photo Editor APD file format and the ACDSee Pro 2.5 Embed Database Information in Files feature.

If you are a Photo Editor and a Pro 2.5 user who has assigned ACDSee database information into you APD file, DO NOT RUN the Embed Database Information in Files feature in Pro 2.5. This feature is presented upon shutdown and the option of not to run is given. Click Cancel. The feature is also available through the Database menu item. Again, do not run this feature. There is no risk to your APD files as long as you do not run the embed feature.

The ACDSee team is actively working on a solution to resolve this issue as soon as possible and you will be notified when the update is available.

As a company, we believe open communication is important and that is why we are alerting you to this issue. Notifications of a resolution will be sent via email and posted to the ACDSee Forums.

We are sorry for any inconvenience that this may cause you.

    The ACDSee team

Kristi's okay I talked with her and she has recovered her apd files (some from backups and some recreating.)
