IPTC field 'author' and search function

    Hi!

I have one issue organizing my pictures:

When entering IPTC metadata into my pictures, I usually describe the content of the picture in the IPTC field 'description', e.g. 'John is playing with Serena'. Now I can use ACDSee's quick search function, enter 'John' and ACDSee shows me the appropriate picture.

    Now my problem:

I also want to know, who actually took the picture, so I add the author of it in the IPTC field 'author'. Let's assume I enter 'Maria Wilkins' in the IPTC field 'author'. When I know search for 'Maria' in quick search, it shows me the picture with John and Serena but not with Maria. But I only want to see pictures that show Maria.

So, does anybody know how to conserve the information about the author without destroying the ability to use quick search to actually find pictures which show certain people?

    Thank you,

    Tankred

    Following extract from help file
The Quick Search automatically searches in the Notes, Author, and Caption fields of the ACDSee database. The Quick Search also searches in the Keywords, Caption, Photographer, Headline, and Special Instructions IPTC fields.

If you look at the note in Options>Browser>Quick Search, I think the wording in that location is slightly wrong. Additionally iptc description per se, does not appear in the iptc pane - which field are you actually using? I suppose the answer is that, because it searches automatically in Keywords, Caption, Photographer, Headline, and Special Instructions in iptc, you will always find ALL returns.

A number of people have asked for full selection on these fields which would enhance QS considerably

Agreed, this would be a really useful addition to the search abilities of the program. But AFAIK you organize your pictures by entering IPTC metadata, too. How do you handle this search problem?

simply translated the field I use as 'description' because this is what the field's description means in my German version of ACDSee. It's the first field in the IPTC properties tab.
Apologies - I never considered translation issues. The first field is caption which is, of course, one of those fields automatically searched.

Yes I also use iptc but have never come across this problem because I generally would go to auto-categories>photgrapher where they are all listed.

You may have noticed I posted a suggestion to the forum a few days relating to this. For the most part, the type of info I enter is such that I don't normally end up with *too* many false hits, except that as noted, I cannot use Quick Search to find pictures of me because I'm listed as Photographer on *everything*. So I use either the full search facility or Auto Categories when I need to.

There are other situations when I have issues like this. For instance, I might enter in the db "Notes" field for a whole group of images, "Party @ Marcus Hampton house", and this gets copied to IPC Headline. I also have all pictures of Marcus keyworded with "Marcus Hampton". So a Quick Search on that name yields both pictures of Marcus *and* pictures from the party at his house. But my default sort order is by date, so the latter images will all be grouped together, making it easy enough to ignore them. Plus, he *is* likely to be in a bunch of those pictures, and it's not too hard to take a qick through the pictures of the party to find him. But I've got to many false hits, again, I can always turn to the full search or Auto Categories.

Another example where it would be extremely useful to be able to save a layout in the details view. You could then, in this example, have a layout showing Filename, Caption and Photographer and click on the header row of your choice to sort
