Import of photos with Device detector a nightmare

Working with ACDSee 2.5 now for some time ...if it's working and not freezing.

The real probleme I have is with importing the files. after some time (random) the application freezes. If you run is again sometimes it works again, but often not. Besides that you can't choose an option to skip the files that are ready on disk. That was an option in 2.0 but disappeard in 2.5.

    Anyone any suggestions ?

I can say I saw this behavior one day (with 2.5), but after rebooting, it went away and never came back.  Not sure if it was a system memory problem or what.

I'm in this Nightmare too....Cannot import more than 2 images then it freezes!!! I had hoped the new patch would help, but no. Why did I upgrade from 2.0 which was great...stupid,stupid,stupid!  Yes some suggestions to help this would be great. I have my biggest sports event of the year this weekend and no way to upload thru 2.5!

Am I right in thinking I can just re install my 2-0-174 Pro beta and it will install as a separate program from2.5? with no conflicts?

  • After installing v2.5 (which automatically uninstalls v2), I subsequently reinstalled v2 to run alongside it. I've had no problems with any conflicts whether I run the programs sequentially or at the same time. (Of course it means I have to maintain two databases, but as my critical data is written into the image files it's not really an issue for me if one is out of date.)

I'd also note that if you can't get the import to work after rebooting, you still have the option of importing images the old fashioned ways - copying them directly from the card, using the Windows import utility, the utility that came with your camera, a third party downloaders, etc.  So it shouldn't be *necessary* to go back to 2.0 just to import images, if you would otherwise prefer to use 2.5.  Of course, if you're also experiencing other problems with 2.5 that make you want to use 2.0, that's another matter.

So evidently I'm not the only one with this issue. Freezes every time I try to import from any one of my devices. And the suggestion to do the imports "the old fashioned way" is pretty lame; the whole point of purchasing a more sophisticated piece of software is precisely to get the more sophisticated functionality. I hope a fix is available soon!

I use Breeze Downloader Pro for importing and highly recommend it.  It just works!

I'm guessing this is one of those problems that is hard to reproduce, since only a couple of people have reported it, and I've seen it only once in dozens of import operations.  So it probably help if you were to submit a support ticket so the support team can contact you directly about the problem.

As you describe you receive this freezing every time you are trying to import new pictures from your device (SD-Card, CF, Memory Stick).

Do you have another card or can you clear the information on your card by moving the files to the pc manually? Can you then take some new pictures onto that card and try if you still have the problem?

You can also use the import function on the manually moved pictures by choosing import from folder. Then you have the same functionality of adding meta data and so on.

Does import from folder work for you?

It would be real nice if ACD would make upgrades so that they didn't uninstall the previous version.  Then if you had problems with the newer version, you could easily go back to the older version until ACD fixed the problem on the newer version.  (whenever that is...)

You can reinstall v2 alongside v2.5, at least that's my experience. I've no idea why the v2.5 installer uninstalls v2 without even asking, when the two programs seem to work together.

So my suggestion for people who are having serious problems with v2.5 (which fortunately, I'm not) is to reinstall v2 but leave v2.5 in place so you can test out any bug-fixes as / when / if they happen.

  • I have not had problems with 2.5 either.. had more with 2.0.  But you know when 3.0 comes out, if you want to install the evaluation, it will uninstall your 2.5 and if you don't want to buy it, well you're gonna be screwed.  And you wont get a warning for it either.  That's why it would be nice if they wouldn't do the uninstall, just copy the db to a new one and leave them both operational.  That would be nice......

Actually, that's *extremely* unlikely.  I can see why an upgrade with the same major version number (eg, 2.0 to 2.5) might replace the previous version, but not one that changes major version number.

In any case, whenever installing downloaded software, it is good practice to save the installer program so you can reinstall if necessary.  I just let them accumulate in my "Download" folder.

BTW, I just had a hang during import again last night.  I rebooted and tried again and all was well.

I can't use the Import feature in Pro 2.5 because the Import From dialog box pops up without the action buttons ( Advanced, import, cancel, etc.) at the bottom of the screen. I've tried stretching the borders but the screen remains the same. ACDSee support says it's a registry problem but the fix didn't work. This is a problem on two different computers with the 9/29/2008 update downloads a month apart.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? I hate having to use Microsoft to download my images!

I had that issue when I tried installing Pro 2.5 on a machine where the screen resolution was below the minimum requirement for ACDSee.  When I bumped up the screen resolution, it worked fine.  Of course, the *reason* the resolution was lower is that I was using a farily small monitor on that system.  When I increased the screen resolution, things became too small for regular use.  Luckily, it's not actually a system I need to use with ACDSee.

I thought about this coment for quite some time after initially thinking "Yes that makes sense". But after a while I came to the conclusion that you have this behaviour with every major version i.e. 1,2,3...

You won't expect this to happen with an update. If you look at the updates for Office (Service Packs) you can also not revert to the version before which is also a problem sometimes. With one of the latest updates they got rid of old file formats (from the competition of course) and now some users have problems opening their files.

But I guess thats the way it goes with an update. This does not mean that I don't like your idea.

    Hello Bill,

would like to check with you if only the buttons are missing but the functionality is there.

Could you try to open the dialog and press ALT + i this should start the import. With ESC you can exit the importer.

    Does this work for you?

Indeed, if I change my resolution from 1024 X 768 to 1280 X 1024 I can see the buttons but then it makes the icons and text for everything else smaller. This makes things hard to read!
