Import categories from a file

    Hi,

Im migrating to Acdsee pro and have previously used another open source image management program. I have a rather big database of "tags" there, which I guess maps to Acdsees categories. I want to transfer those to acdsee. Right now I have managed to get them out of the old database and into an excel sheet (so I can easily create a comma separated file for instance).

I cannot, however, seem to find a feature in Acdsee to import tags or categories into the program. Is there a way to do that?

I should add, is there a way to import the tags (keywords, categories or what they're called) via exif keywords or something? I have quite a lot of experience with exif programming so I will be able to get them in there...

Catalog yoru images and it will read in all the EXIF and IPTC information.  If the keywords were stored in IPTC keywords, all this information will be brought in.    In the organize pane, look under Auto Categories | Commonly Used | Keywords and you should see the info populated there.

This is different than ACDsee's Categories.  These need to be created manually.  There is a way to transfer categories/keywords from one ACDSee to another, but no way that I know of to import categories in from a different format.

  • For most people who want to migrate data from another program to ACDSee the problem is how to get the category / keyword coding into the image files. If you can or have done that then ACDSee can access those. If you then want to transfer these to ACDSee own categories, you can do so by using Tools > Batch Set to map the IPTC or Exif fields to ACDSee's own. (It's worth checking in advance that ADCSee can "see" the fields you intend to use.)

This, however, will not create a Category Tree-structure for you (the result will be "flat" with every category at the same level), but you can create this afterwards by dragging the categories around in the Organizer pane. So, for example, if an image has the categories or keywords "Animal", "Cat" and "Tabby", these could be copied into ACDSee categories, but you would then have to drag "Cat" onto "Animal" to make it a sub-category, and similarly with "Tabby" onto "Cat".

You will have a problem, though, if two or more categories have the same sub-categories, as ACDSee won't be able to distinguish between them. I can't think of a good example at the moment, so I'll use a bad one instead: Imagine you have two categories, "Subject" and "Orientation" and both have a sub-category called "Landscape". When you copy these over, ACDSee wouldn't be able to distinguish between them, and so will simply assign each image to the single category "Landscape". You can get round this problem by re-naming the categories in the old program to ensure each is unique. (You can always rename them back once they are in ACDSee.)

    Hope that helps.

Ok, thank you very much for your responses!

I have some ideas on how to get the categories into some exif or itpc tag with some nice scripts, so I will probably look into that in the weekend.
