How to share categorization data

Hi there, I have read that ACDSee historically has some problems with shared drives and databases.  I had hoped to work with a master database which my wife and I could access from both my PC and my laptop and we could both categorize pictures and have our work together in the same database.  If this is not a supported scenerio then what is ACDSee's solution to have category data from two databases sync'd together into one?

As a side gripe, I am alittle dissipointed that ACDSee has so many problems with shared databases.  I am a home user but I purchased ACDSee Pro because I expected I would be able to do this sort of thing.

    Did you try "File/Sync..."?

If both both PC's can see the same actual database folde,r this should work just fine, as long as you are careful not to try to modify anything in the db from both computers at the same time 0 there is no concurrency control built in to ACDSee.

Since it isn't often possible to guarantee two computers that can both see the db won't try to access it at the same, I think the better solution for most people would be to have separate db's on each machine but synchronize them from time to time.  And the best way to do that would be to use Database->Embed Metadata to embed you db info in the image files themselves any time you make changes on one system, then run Catalog Files on those files on the other system.

    Hi Marc,

First off I wanted to say Thank you for the help you provide to everyone on this forum. Much appreciated.

I have been trying to research the problem stated in the original post. I saw another post of yours on a simliar topic that recommended another approach to this dilemma (http://community.acdsee.com/forums/topic/acd-pro-shared-on-network?replies=3#post-25084). The approach on THIS topic seems much easier. Do they accomplish the same thing?

    Thanks again.

The database -> embed is great for transferring files to another computer, but it doesn't work well in trying to share database information between 2 computers and going back and forth.

If you embed the files, catalog the files on each computer, it works initially and it works on any files you haven't organized.  But let's say you had categories assigned to one image (and both computers know about it), if you switch the category and embed.  The computer that you did it on will be right, but even after you catalog the files again on the other computer it will not pick up the switched category.  ACDSee's logic is it assumes if something is in the database it overrides what is embedded in the file.  That is why the changes are not picked up.  You could delete the whole database and recatalog the files and pick up the information if you have a lot of time to let ACDSee catalog files.

The easiest way is to place your database folder (Default folder found in user settings) in common location with the files in common location and share that way.

Thank you very much for the clarification Heidi.

Unfortunately, I tried sharing the database between machines and did not have any luck. The ACDSee installation that had to access the database on a network drive woud eventually lock up on startup and I woud have to reinstall (this problem touched on here: http://community.acdsee.com/forums/topic/cannot-access-db-on-windows-share-after-25-upgrade).

On another thread I read that the ACDSee development team is working on a fix for database sharing/synchronization (http://community.acdsee.com/forums/topic/multi-user-support-and-synchronization). The user dfidler posted a link to the ACDSee blog that was out of date unfortunately. Does anybody else know if there's an upcoming feature to solve this problem.

Hi. I am interested in an update on this (that there may be some more development work in the area). I have two or three members of a team who regularly access shared phot-assets and I was hoping that they could use ACDSee Pro to better catalogue and find them.  I was going to put the database on a share drive and point their local apps to this shared database.  I am a little concerned now that this won't be as straight forward as I had hoped.  Any further news?

The process of pointing all machines to the same database on a shared server is in fact straght forward. The problem is ACDSee crashing because of this.

Unfortunately I haven't heard any news of a resolution. Seems quite overdue, though.

The current versions do not share concurrent ACDSee's running.

There is the workaround that you place the database in one common location and only have one ACDSee program accessing the database at one time.  This works okay.
