Hang during photo import

Hi, when I import photos, either from camera via USB connection or via memory card slot in computer, the import process typically hangs partway through the import.  No photos are lost, but I have to shut down the device detector, and often reboot the computer and restart the import.  Sometimes this happens several times in a row.  I am running Windows XP with ACDSee Pro 2.5, build 358.  Any thoughts or suggestions?

Grrr.  Happens to me sometimes too, and a few others.  I'm trying to help ACD figure out what might be triggering it (I'm assuming they don't know or they'd have fixed it in the last patch).  What camera are you using, what file format (JPEG, DNg, other RAW, etc), and are you trying to write IPTC info while importing?  Anything else you can say about what you are doing that might be different from what "most" people" do?

    Hi Marc,

It's good to know I'm not the only one.  Here is some info on how I use ACDSee.

    0. There are two things I do that are probably odd.  One is that I often have two or more people logged into the same laptop, and "switch users" regularly between them.  The second is that I frequently hibernate the machine, only restarting when I have problems.  Restarting often (but not always) fixes this problem.

    1. I use exclusively JPEG.  Pictures are typically 2-4mb each in size.

    2. I currently use a point-and-shoot, the Lumix TZ5.

    3. I have the problem whether connecting to the camera via a cable, or when I insert the memory card into the computer's SD slot.

    4. I run Vista 32-bit pretty much fully patched.

    5. It's a Lenovo X200 laptop with a variety of Lenovo-supplied utilities running.

    6. I run Kaspersky antivirus, up-to-date.  I have not tried disabling it.

    7. I have the import set to mostly defaults, except for the location where the files go (c:\data\pictures).  I also have auto-rotate turned on, and I delete items from source after import.  I don't do any backup or renaming.  I place files in a single folder with today's date.  I don't set any metadata or categories during the imports -- I just click and go every time.

    8. It's the device detector that Windows reports has stopped working.  Perhaps I'll try disabling the device detector (not sure how to do this) and manually starting the import with ALT-G.  Has anyone tried this, and did it fix the problem?

    Cordially,

    Eric

Thanks, that's lot of good info.  I do hope they get this figured out.  Looks like there isn't a lot on your list that applies to me, but one thing catches my eye: your use of a less-common antivirus program (I use Avast).  So conflict with "offbrand" antivirus programs seems worth considering, at least.  Also, I've never specifically noticed whether Windows reports the problem being with Device Detector.  Do you mean you bring up Task Manager and it shows an ACDSee process and a Device Detector process and it's the latter that isn't responding?  I've never actually paid attention to that myself, and in fact am unclear on the funciton of the Device Detector.

Same problem. Getting downright frustrating... infuriating even. The program crashes on startup half the time, and now it hangs & crashes 90% of the time when I try to import from my Memory Stick Pro Duo. I love the program *when* it works, but that is getting to be less and less often.

    ACDSeePro 2.5 Build 358

    OS: Windows Vista Home Premium

AntiVirus: uninstalled at this time (probs with ACDSee still exist)

When importing from my card/stick, I can get sometimes as far as 50 pics, sometimes 60, sometimes only 3, or even just 1, then the lousy things freezes & I have to close it - then it stops responding & I have to tell Windows to close the program.

Really need to get this fixed. I paid for this expensive program because of its great features, but they are useless to me if the program just hangs most the time. (BTW, I have had ACDSee Pro for a couple years now - I'm not exactly new to using it.)

This happens to me virtually everytime I import pics to ACDsee. Don't have any problems if I import to windows viewer. I'm importing from an SD card in the slot on my laptop. Windows Vista. etc.

This is really really frustrating. Please Please sort it out.

Exactly the same issue. Very frustrating.

It seems to happen pretty randomly. It happens whether importing from the camera OR from the SD card slot. Sometimes it happens haflway through, sometimes after only the first couple of imports. Sometimes when importing a large number of files, sometimes with only a few.  I import JPEGs only. I do not change any metadata or assign categories during imports, only the default settings. I am using XP with all current updates and patches.

I have many years of ACDSee use invested in my photo collection, spent many hours assigning categories, etc. so I feel committed to the software, but using it is increasingly frustrating.

This has been happening to me too, for a while now.

    ACDSee Pro 2.5 Build 358

    Vista Ultimate SP1 32bit

    Norton 360

Nikon D70 via USB or CF card reader

    Canon A510 via card reader

Desktop PC with lots of memory and Core2Duo CPU

Seems pretty random - just imported 174 photos: crashed after 64, then after 2, then after 82.

I import to nested folders by year and date (yyyy\yyyy-mm-dd) but that doesn't seem to be a commoon thread.

I have automatic rotation on - but I've not seen a pattern with it stopping at photos that need rotation

Does it whether or not i've elected to delete from source after import (one good thing with the later versions is that files are deleted as they are imported, not at the end as they used to be, so it's not so difficult to resume where you left off. If you're not deleting it can take a while to get back where you were, or to avoid duplicates - I can;t find an option to skip files with duplicate names).

I'm another long-term user, but this grief is making me think again.

I have a workaround that works for me, and I thought I would share it.  The problem seems to be caused by the ACDSee "Device Detector," the function of which is to automatically start ACDSee when you plug in your camera.  If you are willing to start the import manually (a few clicks) then this may work for you also.

    To test it:

    1. Right click on ACDSee "device detector" in tray and choose "Exit".

    2. Insert memory card in computer (or attach camera cable).

    3. Cancel out if Windows pops up and asks what you want to do with the files detected on your memory card.

    4. Manually open ACDSee.

    5. Press ALT-G to initiate an import.  Choose "from device" and then choose your memory card (or camera).  If ACDSee says there is no device to import from, then remove and reinsert the memory card and try again.

If that works for you (as it does for me), you may want to prevent ACDSee Device Detector from loading.  To do so:

-- Open command prompt (DOS prompt with CMD)
-- run MSCONFIG at command prompt.
    -- Choose Startup tab
-- uncheck "Device Detector" and choose OK.
-- You can either restart now or later.

By the way, it may work to choose "Import with ACDSee" when Windows detects the memory card.  That not how I've been doing it, so I didn't say to do that.  But you might want to try it.  If it works this would make things really easy -- just one click.

I'd be interested to hear if anyone knows how to make device detector function correctly -- disable autoplay in Windows?  Add memory?  In any case, this works fine for me right now.

I don't even have Device Detector installed, so I always import from within ACDSee with Import/From Device and I still get some hung ups every now and then.

Same here.  I try to keep my start-up as clean as possible, so I disabled the Device Detector a long time ago, and start my imports manually from within ACDSee. Still gets randomly hung-up.
