Please join me in welcoming Dave and his new team back to the Canvas family!"

Now, there's a name that rings a bell!

Welcome back Dave. Here's hoping you and your team can steer Canvas towards at last achieving the wide recognition and market success it so richly deserves.

This news made my day...which is probably a sad comment on my day. But if this signals a commitment by ACDsee to get some renewed canvas mojo boiling, color me very interested.

This is all a wonderful, totally unexpected surprise. Of course the news is going to take a little getting used to!

The "new" ACD seems ready to move forward with Canvas as we all wished and hoped against all hope. Maybe our passionate reasoning was finally heard?

Since the mid-'90s I've recognized Canvas as a unique product, and still feel that way. As "The Canvangelist" I am always ready to revive my support for any new Canvas development efforts, just like I did in the Deneba days.

I'm looking forward to hearing more from ACD as time goes on!

I have been a longtime Canvas user - since the earliest days, yet I remain a casual user. Still, I have always wanted to run a capable GIS system on a Mac... and not have to deal with X11, etc as in Open Grass. I am a long time ESRI user and also use Google Earth, WorldWind, Dapple and MS VE. I really want to be able to have equivalent capability running native on a mac. Any help/suggestions? Any samples of GIS work in Environmental Sciences using Canvas GIS?

Also, I do have Canvas X and would like to upgrade, if possible. Since my home university (for which I am environmental science and science/technology education faculty) is broke, I'd like to think that I might be welcomed back into the Canvas fold with a bit of a break on the cost?

    Thanks for your time.

'Spring announcement' could very well mean June 20th, the last day of spring.

    Wow,

if this means that Canvas will evolve again and give a Canvas 12 or XII, then I'm more than happy.
I have been using Canvas since version 3.5 on Windows and earlier version on the Mac.
Have been a beta tester since version 8 too. So if you need a beta tester again, count me in.

Just waiting to see some more news about a new version of Canvas.

    Good news.

Uh, funny that I just thought I'd come back for a quick visit after such a long time.

It looks like the "heat" and "ire" over no Canvas Mac version has died down.  That's healthy I suppose.  But does it look like that Canvas might be returning to the Mac?  Wow!  Hope it does. I'll be waiting to purchase the upgrade.

Glad to hear that some of the old Denaba people are on your team.

Let's hope Dave Alligood and his old Deneba team (are Jay, Rob & Fernando back on board?) can convince ACDSee to consider bringing back a Mac version. I'm pretty pessimistic on the point though (see: http://community.acdsee.com/forums/topic/acd-systems-is-discontinuing-sales-of-canvas-x-for-mac), but I shall hope for the best.

" ... That said, please use a certain degree of both diplomacy and respect in your asking and I can assure you it will be returned ... We know many of you have strong feelings about the ACD that acquired Canvas, but I can only state again that this is a different company and they deserve a chance to do something with this product we all share a passion about. ..."

with as much diplomacy as i can muster, and thinking 6 months of "a chance" is a pretty good start, can someone @ ACD please directly address the will-it-be-on-Mac-again question?

'stealth mode' is all find & good, but, tbh, after the original "buy it for Windows, or go away" msg received from ACD _after_ the merger, and now the "teaser" from Dave & team (" ... nothing would please me more than a re-continued cross-platform development of the product. Sadly, decisions that were made well before the merger w/ ACD are preventing that from happening right now ...") it would be respectul to customers, even if former, to revisit/reclarify.

i certainly understand the "we're not a charity" argument ... then again, afaict from the forums here (everyone _says_ they'd be willing to pay $$$), and the paucity of available alternatives other than CS4 (whic, btw, lots of folks _do_ pay for), there sure seems to be a road that leads to some revenue ... profit, admittedly, is a different matter.

    thanks.

The current direction of the product does not include the development of Canvas for the Mac OS. This decision was made in May of 2007 and the direction for the product has not changed since then. If and when there is a change, I will be the first to let you all know but until then, no, Canvas is not being developed for the Mac.
