Can't get a handle on the option to feather the edge an image. What I want is to Place an image, cut out a random shaped selection and feather the edge.
I select the part of an image I want to use, and option Image/Select/Feather but to no avail.
Help is much appreciated on what should be a simple thing.

I'm working through the same problem. I drew a line with the auto curve tool around the edge. Under image I used the "path to selection." Then I feathered the edge. Again I found it difficult to see a difference. I feathered the edge 25 pixels. My image is between 300 and 900 dpi, 1 X 1 inch photograph.

Jan I've got this to work - not how I thought it would.
seems like one has to select part of the image using one of the three selection methods (lasso etc) then Image/select/feather. Then this was where I came unstuck. I then used Edit/copy. Deeselcted everything, then Edit/paste and the feathered image is placed on the artboard.
I read through the manual starting at Selections on page 533.
It seems one cant just feather an image without selecting a part of it inside the image- ie an area smaller than the whole image.
Maybe I've missed the boat so if anyone has some correction here I'd welcome that.
    regards Richard

    Hi Richard,

Well, you learn something new every day. I tried your procedure and it worked fine. It renders an image with transparency around it, even around an "object" shadow. Just beautiful.

This from Matt Cuson, on the Wizaerd's Realm forum:

Editing photos can be tricky and it's easy to mess up the tracing around the portion you want. I do this instead. Select the pencil line tool (or the autocurve tool) and create a vector object that outlines the portion of the picture you want. Select the object and the image, then create the clipping path. Group and you're done. If you mess up the basic shape, you still have the vector shape that you can edit. You also still have the complete image in case you need that too.

I had done what Matt described but I still wanted to feather the edges because a clipping path created a hard edge.

Once the clipping path is applied, I used the wand tool to select the removed area. I used the Inverse command for the selection, feathered, copied and pasted to have the feathered image.

Path to selection doesn't allow for the process described by Richard because the selection marque is removed after the feathering command is applied. But I did not explore this option extensively and I did not read the manual.
