I have coped a large folder of photos to a external drive for backup purposes, and now when i go to categories it is showing me 2 thumbnails for every file. Is it a software problem or did I copy out of ACDS incorrectly.

    any help would be appreciated.

If you copied rather than moved, you have 2 'versions' of each image and the dbase will hold the data for both images.  What do you wish to finish up with?

    Thanks Sam.

I was trying to save a copy of a large group of photos after culling out the rubbish and before I started any editing. I normally do all my work from the organize list, but as I have 2 copies of all the thumbnails, I can only work from the file list.

Any help in removing the extra thumbnails would be helpful.

OK so if I have this right, the copies on your external drive are for backup purposes only.  Easiest way is to set that drive as 'excluded' and then do database maintenance.  If you can't do this for some reason, just select the folder on the external drive and then Tools>database>exclude selected folders and then do dbase maintenance.

Do you really need to do Data Base Maintenanace? If I exclude a folder from the data base I would guess ACDSee delete the data for that folder. If you MOVE a folder to another place from without of ACDSee the program is unable to track that action and data bas maintenance will be needed.

NEED?  Probably not but I always prefer to re-pack the dbase tables after such an operation

OK... Guess it never a bad thing to do - if you have the time.

BTW, there is also an option (tools-options-file management) where you can set whether making a copy of a file also preserves the database information; you could turn that off.  But that seems like it would a mistake in general; *some* copies you probably want to keep db info for.  So I agree the basic approach of exlcuding the backup drive makes more sense in this particular case.
