Editor 2008 continues to crash regularly - any ideas???

  • Everytime I use this software to edit JPG photo files, I can only edit 2 or 3 files and then it crashes.  I reported this here about 4 months ago, but it continues to do it.  I can't find any updates to the software for build 286.  I wish I still had the Beta version as it worked fine.  What a waste of money to have bought this.  I guess I am a glutton for punishment as it really does do what I want it to do very well, so I use it but have to keep restarting it.  I have about 300 photos to edit from the weekend and only got about 30 done in the last 2 hours.  I have to keep restarting the software after every 2 or at the most 3 photos are edited.  I usually load about 15 and it takes about 6-7 restarts to get them all done.   This is VERY FRUSTRATING software to use!

    Hello DHP,
To get an idea on what could be happening (which might help the support folks) would be to fire up the task manager (CTRL+ALT+DELETE), switch to the Performance tab, and keep an eye on that as you bring up the editor and begin to work.  If Bill's suspicion of a memory leak is correct, you would quickly see that.
I don't have a solution,  just something to try to nail down the problem

  • Thanks, that is a great idea.  I run Sysinternals Process Explorer on this system so I can easily monitor it's performance.

  • Just thought I would leave an update on this situation.  I have tried monitoring memory usage during the editing and saving of photos.  There doesn't appear to be any obvious memory problem.  I again communicated with "Support".  Their suggestions were 1) to enter %appdata% to the command prompt and remove the "FY2008" folder.  (It gets rebuilt when you open PE2008 if you remove it.)  Of course you lose all your presets, options, etc. when you do that.  It didn't really help very much, although I was able to edit 4-5 photos before it crashed the first time I did it.  I did it several times, but before long, it was back to 2-3 photos before crashing, even after deleting this file.  Next suggestion was to turn off Hardware acceleration.  Did that , rebooted, no change.  Finally, they said to remove PE2008 and reinstall.  Did that too.  Sorry to say, no change.  I even tried only loading and editing one photo at a time and then deleting everything before I tried another photo.  Made no difference.  I am giving up.  I will just have to write off the price I paid and go looking for some other software.  Its too bad because this software really does seem to be great if it would just stop crashing all of the ime. Anybody got any other software suggestions? (Can't afford the "gold" standard - PhotoShop.) - Rick

  • Well, despite my supposed decision to give up on this software, I'm back with another update.  A friend sent me a group of photos they had taken at an event I could not attend.  I selected about 25 of them to add to my website.  That meant that they needed to be edited.  The file were all JPG files in the 700k -1mb size range.  I decided to try editing them using PE2008.  I opened the software, opened each photo individually, did the editing necesary, and saved the photo.  Then I removed the photo and went through the process again on the next photo.  When I do that on my own photos which are JPG files in the 3-7mb size range, the software will cancel after 2 or, at the most, 3 photos are edited.  However, in this case, I was able to edit and save all 25 photos with no problem.  I'm wondering if the problem is related to the larger size of my photos files.  Any comments?   Am I the only one having problems like this with this software?

    Hello DHP,

jpeg does not equal jpeg. Especially when we are talking about jpegs out of a digital camera. They include many kinds of meta data information that might cause the trouble. Some manufacturers add quite fancy data called maker notes. Because of their individuality they are known to cause trouble.

What camera do you use to take pictures. Could you provide a sample file to play around with?

I sent you my email via PM

    Hello DHP,

I receives your pictures - very impressive I must say. I also have a Minolta but it is only a Dimage 7i. The 7D seems to create very high quality pictures!

Actually I installed PE2008 and did some editing like rotation adding some squares and test etc. I opened all images at once and randomly edited them before saving. Actually I was not able to get PE to crash just a single time. Could you please describe the workflow of edits that you normally do in order to cause the stability problems. I would like to follow that and try to reproduce.

  • Just saw your message.  Most of the time when I am working with the photos, the main functions I use are the various functions in the "Light" category.  Specifically the shadows/highlight, levels, and curves functions.  I also will ofter used the Sharpen functions, Sharpen Edges and Sharpen, although I often use other software for this as the other software allows to select only a protion of the photo that I want to sharpen.  I will occationally use the crop or clone function, but that is only occasionally.  I load the photo using the "Add Image" function.  Then I double click on it to activate it on the main panel.  I do all of my editing and then usually do a Save As into another folder so I can retain the original photo intact.  I then delete the original photo using the"Remove Images" function.  I can usually go through this process about twice before I get Microsoft message box that the software must close and asking if I want to send a report to Microsoft.  I used to add about 15 photos at a time and not delete them when I was done with each one, but it got frustrating to wait for them to load and then have the system crash after only a few were edited so I went to the one at a time method, but still have the problem.  I run Trend Micro's Internet Security Suite for virus/firewall software and do have several other background processes running.  Maybe your software is having a conflict with some other software.....????  I do regular scans using several different software products for adware, etc. and never have anything major show up.

My PE software has been crashing my computer for the last 2 versions, that is one of the reason i upgraded lately but i still experience the same crash where I have to give the 1 finger salute to reboot my 1 year old HP laptop equippep with Vista and 4 gig of Ram. I frankly do not know what to do with this very frustrating software PE 2008.

  • You know what is the real pisser with this software company is that they really don't seem to give a darn.  There is obviously problems with this software but they really don't seem to care. If they treat this software like that, one has to wonder how much support they provide for all of their other software.  This was a complete waste of the purchase price.  I would have been better off to stay with Gimp or some of the free software as to have spent the money for this crap.

    Hello Draft Horse,

The issue has been escalated to the team but I must impress upon you that this forum is a peer to peer network. If you have a specific issue that you want the company to address, you need to submit a support ticket here.

  • Sorry Melanie.....I feel frustrated.  As to your suggestion, I did that already and none of the suggested actions fixed the problem. I sent in some of my photos, changed the ini file, uninstalled and reinstalled, ect. but no luck.  Nothing seems to fix the problems that I and others have been having.  If you read thru this series, you can see all of the things that have been tried.

Hello Draft Horse and others now involved

I have had very very similar problems but with Manager.

Here are some notes that I have been keeping -

    ACDSee Program Manager 2009 v11.0 (Build 113) - downloaded 09/07/2009

    EVENT 1
program takes an inordinately long time to open - on some occasions it takes so long that you think it isn't going to open at all and use a second open command eventually resulting in two copies of the program opening.

    EVENT 2
program continually crashes during when performing functions including, copying & moving files (of any sort and any size)

    EVENT 3
is that I am unable to rename a file, err message - 'file is in use...' when it is not I have even opened and reclosed the last program which used it (if known) I have then resorted to using Windows Explorer to rename it without problems.

    EVENT 4
manager takes inordinately long time ( >minute ) to even open dialogue window when replacing one large file from one folder to another on same or diff drive if I don't want to wait I try to cancel or close the Manager. Both cause the title bar to include (Not Responding) and if I persist or even click somewhere else in the window the Manager greys out.
I then have to use Windows Task Manager to close the program. The only other action is to go away for a while and hope, and sometimes Manager starts working, sometimes not. So far Windows Explorer has not exhibited any problems so I presume it is a problem in ACDSee Program Manager I only found out by accident that it eventually works when I decided to wait longer than I normally did and had the time to waste .

    FURTHER NOTES.:
As I use ACDSee Program Manager extensively (in preference to Windows Explorer) I know that this problem is not an isolated event I do not use all of the program's functions though I have begun to broaden my usage I have removed my previous version (2008 dont ask-legal) of manager in order to ensure there are no clashes. I have optimised the database, I have reinstalled manager after having used both official repair suggestions I have ended up being unable to use the in-built editor. When the cut, edit or text buttons are clicked on just a grey window occurs.
Events occur irrespective of drv location. ie network, local or internal events occur irrespective of drv free space but is usually > 50GB.
OS is Vista OEM (Toshiba satellite notebook) - Intel Centrino 2 processor but events also occur on an ACER PC also with Vista OEM both pieces of equipment are <12 months old and software is updated automatically via Windows/Toshiba/Acer auto-update features.

So I am following this with great expections !!!

I'm not sure what kind of update you're looking for. The thread is about Photo Editor and you issue is with Photo Manager. Plus, both issues are support questions and need to have tickets submitted. Have you submitted a support ticket?

  • I am a very basic user of PE2008. I had used an older version for years and loved it. This new version has the crashing problem for me, with anywhere from 2-12 photos edited per crash. I am working with snapshots, doing nothing more complicated than cropping, resizing, "save as" renaming. It drives me crazy and wastes such huge amounts of time to constantly restart the program.

Yes, I have submitted a ticket and sincerely hope that there is a fix for this problem!
