"E" shortcut hardcoded to exposure warning in View mode

I have customized the "E" key to take me to Edit mode from View mode.  But pressing E instead briefly flashes the exposure warning.  I have verified that E is not assigned to that command (actually, the description that shows up for this command is also bogus - says something about uploading up to 10 files?).  I find that is I press and release E, it briefly toggles the state of the warning and then immediately returns to previous view.  If I press the shortcut I have actually assigned to he exposure warning, it toggles normally and sticks.  If I press and *hold* E for more than a second or two, it does what I asked and takes me to Edit mode.

BTW, I take it this behavior is new to Beta 2, as my recollection is that beta 1 didn't have a simple way to toggle the warning at all..

  • One of these days I'll figure out how to do that.  Or, I may switch to my G15 keyboard and use the macro keys for the same purpose.

I did find something of interest in Beta 2 that wasn't in Beta 1.  It is in the Develop mode.  - After Developing, it automatically reverts to the "View" mode.  Strange, what if I want to Edit.  Well, no problem, a couple of clicks later and I'm in Edit mode - all the while the image stayed in its 'zoomed' condition.  I think I posted something on this in another forum.

Strange behavior.  Some might call it a bug.  Well, its one of the good guys.  And I like it.  I'd like to be able to do the same thing between Processing - Edit.  The program doesn't behave the same in Processing - Edit as it does in Processing Develop upon saving.

Do you mean after pressing Done?  It should be reverting to whichever mdoe you were in when you entered Process mode - either Manage or View.  That's how it works for me.

Strange, what if I want to Edit.

You can go straight from Develop to Edit by simply clicking the Edit tab which still in Process mode.  You can also get there directly from Manage or View mode using the keyboard shortcut - unless you've customized your keyboard shortcut from View mode to be E, in which case you need to press and hold for a second or two due to the bug I described above :-)

I don't understand what you are saying here - might want to try describing in more detail what you are doing, what you are expecting it to do, and what it is doing instead?

  • Marc,

This is the trouble with having no real release documentation: what else has changed that I don't know about, or may change, undocumented, in the final release version?

Now I like the idea of being able to easily toggle the Exposure Warning (in fact it's something I asked for here: http://community.acdsee.com/forums/topic/view-mode-over-exposure-warning#post-37180 ), but I'm less happy that:

    (1) I can't set a keystroke of my choice (and if I can't choose my own, I'd at least like consistency: e.g. in Compare Images it's toggled by the "O" key). But in fact I can no longer find a way to do any key assignment in View mode as that menu option is disabled: how did you do it?

    (2) I can no longer find any way of defining the threshold values for "Over" and "Under".

    (3) It seems to work differently:

It looks to me as if the Warning is triggered when any channel goes over a (unspecified) threshold (channel clipping), whereas I think the old method required all three channels to exceed the threshold (what I might call "broad-bush" over exposure). Personally I'm not so keen on the new method. To be useful, I'd want it to indicate which channels are being clipped, something like what I'm used to in the Levels dialog of Photoshop Elements. To implement that in the Pro3's Viewer there'd need to be separate keystrokes for "Over" and "Under", hold down the "Over" one and the image would go black except for where clipping was happening, and in those places the colour would show which channels were being clipped. (Similarly for "Under", except the image would go white.)

Without that level of information I'd rather go back to the previous "broad brush" method, but would like to retain the ability to toggle it easily!

Yes, I know and I like that.  I can even go directly to edit from this position and all settings are held.

However, let's say you are in Manage mode and you zoom in to look at something, like is it red eye or just a spec.  If you find red eye, you then to into Develop Mode, select Editing and the image reverts to what it was before the zoom.  OK, I can live with that EXCEPT  . . .

If you are in Develop-Processing and press the Done key, it reverts to Manage.  From here you do that zoom to see if you need to fix the red eye or is it a spec.  It is a red eye that needs to be fixed.  So, you click on Develop then Edit --- guess what, IT IS STILL IN ZOOM MODE - Wow.  Then click on the red eye link to fix - - -  WOW, THE IMAGE IS STILL IN ZOOM MODE - Nice!

So, now you think, let's see if they can KEEP the zoom after Develop-Process, WHY CAN'T THEY KEEP IT BEFORE you begin Processing?  Strange behavior for sure.  It's like one set of programmers know how to do it and the other set doesn't.  Yet, when the various segments are stitched together, no one notices these two types of sequences.

Now, do you see where I'm coming from?

Right, although as I observed elsewhere, it actually seems to be the case that if you go directly to Edit rather than first going to Develop, it *does* keep the zoom setting.  FWIW.

OK, I think I am hearing am understanding that when you enter Edit by way of Develop mode, sometimes it preserves your zoom setting and sometimes it does not.  I actually haven't been able to get it to preserve it unless I *don't* go through Develop, but I'm sure it depends on something we're doing differently, so I won't sweat that.  Anyhow, yeah, sounds like you've found a bug if if it's not consistent.  I hadn't recognized from your previous description above you were talking about the same thing as in your other thread on this topic.

Hmm, I didn't notice any special problem.  From view mode, view-toolbars-customize-keyboard, then View form the category drop down, then Exposure Warning.  The :description reads "Number of concurrent uploads must be between 1 and 1" (uh, yeah...). I can't remember if E showed up as a current key, but if so, I removed it, then installed W as my own shortcut.  But the "E" key still behaves as I describe - a quick flash of the warning if I simply press E, but takes me to Edit mdoe as I have also customized if I press and hold it.  W now works to display the warning normally.

  • Well that's strange. On both the computers I have Pro3 installed on, View mode: "View" menu > "Toolbars" has the "Customize" option greyed out so it's unavailable.

Then again, I can't remember whether it was available in Beta 1, as I rarely go from View to Process so I may not have set up any shortcut keys.

    I think it's time for a new bug report . . . http://community.acdsee.com/forums/topic/view-mode-gt-view-menu-gt-toolbars-gt-customise-is-disabled

    Marc,

If it is a bug, can they keep it and make it a feature?  That would be very nice.

Also, where is the setting that allows me to go to Processing-Edit?  Whenever I go into Processing, from either View or Manage, it defaults to Develop.  I rarely use Develop and would prefer to go directly to Processing-Edit.  Remember, I don't like programming keys as I would rather work directly with the program rather than going through a ton of gyrations to get it to work for me.  :)

The default keyboard shortcut is Ctrl-Alt-E.  You can generally find the default keyboard shortcut right next to any menu item in any Windows program.  Edit mode is accessed via Tools->Process->Edit.  So you can either use the menu, the keyboard shortcut Ctrl-Alt-E, or spend the 20 seconds it takes to make the shortcut something even simpler, like "E" :-)

  • Marc,

It works for me now that I know the keystrokes.  However, the short cuts are not reflected on the various menu selections.  I don't know when they exist or not exist.  How do I "turn on" those specialized short cut labels?

Now, with that said, while in Manage Mode, many of the common short cuts are listed on the applicable selection.  There is no listing for Ctrl-Alt-E anywhere within the application while in Manage Mode.  Once I enter into Process-Develop Mode, then the Ctrl-Alt-E gets displayed.  Like I said, until then it is non-existent.  Until you said in your post the Ctrl-Alt-E would bypass Process-Develop, there was no indication.  The question then becomes "why would I want to do Ctrl-Alt-E while in Process-Develop when I can click on Process-Edit with the mouse key?  I wouldn't for that reason, unless my mouse decided to go belly up.  Then I would use the / key to get to the menu and slowly but doggedly move around the menu functions.  Frankly, I would get the heck out of the application and fix my mouse before doing any of that.

Just to be sure before posting this response, I went into Help and there wasn't anything there that would give me ALL or even a partial list for the keyboard short cuts.

Thus, your partial statement of "You can generally find the default keyboard shortcut right next to any menu item . . ."doesn't make sense.  I'm in ACDSee Pro 3.  Why should I switch to some other application to find all the short cut keys?  I shouldn't.  Nevertheless, I tested it with one of the more expensive products Front Page 2003 - No Ctrl-Alt-E.  I then looked in Excel from Office 2003; nothing there either.  OK, one more - Breeze Browser Pro V1.7.2 (the latest) - nope! Nothing there either.

Next stop:  Google.  support.microsoft.com/kb/126449  and  support.microsoft.com/kb/301583 using key words "keyboard shortcuts".  Document 126449 did not have it listed.  Document 301583 doesn't list it either.

Now, I'm not attempting to embarrass anyone nor take issue with the fact that CTRL-ALT-E is specialized only to ACDSee Pro Beta 3; all I want to know is how do I turn on the specific menu labels to show ALL of the keystrokes both common and specialized, rather then just the common ones?

Built-in keyboard shortcuts are listed under "Shortcuts" in the Help Contents.  (See screenshot below)

Instructions for defining your own keyboard shortcuts are found in the Help Contents under Options and Configuration / Customizing and Configuring.

ACDSee's keyboard shortcuts work only within the ACDSee window.

On my computer, keyboard shortcuts do appear next to their corresponding menu items.  There's no ACDSee or Windows setting to turn this on or off as far as I can tell.   (screenshot below)

However, as PicManPro points out, there's no one place to find a complete list of all the shortcuts including user-defined ones.  In Develop or Edit Mode, the menus are stripped down to only a few items, and there is no access to the Customize dialog.  Definitely there is room for improvement here.

Some Develop/Edit tools have special hotkeys which aren't on the menus and aren't listed in the Shortcut pages of the Help.  Some of those are revealed by tooltips, such as E to toggle the exposure warning.  Also there are mouse shortcuts which I haven't seen anywhere in the documentation, such as using the scroll wheel to adjust sliders.

Thanks.  This will come in handy.  However, the discussion is on the key strokes for CTRL-ALT-E.  So, if I'm looking specifically for those three keys in sequence on this chart, then I never will find them because isn't there.

Nevertheless, I'm always up for trying new keystrokes.  I found a CTRL-E which is two keys not three - it works, although quite slow on a 200 kb image.  Where as CTRL-ALT-E had no hesitency.

Hey, I'm just the messenger attempting to find all the short cuts available.

The thing is that I was told I could find the 3-keystroke short cut on any other Windows application.   I didn't.  What I did find is that in Europe there is a 2-key and 3-key sequence for the Euro sign.  In Japan, they use the 2-key and 3-key sequence for another symbol although for both Europe and Japan, it is built right into the operating system.
