Apologies if this has been raised before but I am only a recent convert (conscript?) to dng.
Previously using the raws themselves ( e.g. Canon CR2), the embedded thumbs were of sufficient quality to allow High Quality Pass to be turned off and the viewer would display instantly. Moving to 100% view in steps was also instant (actually less than 1 second). Quality throughout was excellent.
I have now converted all CR2, CRW etc to dng and retain the raws outside the database.
So what has changed:
1. Loading a thumb into preview still about 1 sec - great
2. Quality not so good - ?
3. Zooming to 100% - awful
Of course, I can turn on HQP, but that brings an overhead of some 4 seconds per image and what I had never realised before, is that Raw Image Preview only works for those images that have had a change effected within the raw processor (which I do not use). I am sure that function has changed in that I seem to remember earlier versions having RIPs for all my images?
Could we not have a HQP toggle in the viewer please?

When you generate your DNG files, are you enabling the higher quality preview within the file? I think the Adobe converter gives you the option of none, medium, or full size. I find the medium good enough for my purposes - quick viewing until I get around to dong my own RAW processing in ACDSee, which then generates its own previews based on my processing. You might find you like having the full size preview better. In any case, I'm guessing from your description of ACDSee's performance that you currently have no preview at all embedded in your file - just the thumbnail (which is not the same thing at all).

'Twas simply sorted by updating the dng preview
Mind-boggling - what was wrong with the old ones??Posted On November 27, 2007 - 10:57 AM (1 year ago) (Permalink to this post) -

Could we not have a HQP toggle in the viewer please? When I was playing around with the DNG format, I thought that having the high quality pass turned on would disable seeing the embedded jpeg. Changes that I did outside of ACDSee, and then updating the embedded jpeg, were not visible unless I turned off the high quality preview. If I had turned on the high quality preview and then updated the embedded jpegs (with the hqp on) I would have to turn off hqp and refresh the views (F5) before I would see the changes. Maybe I'm remembering wrong...
