DNG Issues and Questions

I use DNG format for archiving my RAW files.

    1.  In view mode, the Magnifying Glass pane doesn't work properly.  For an undeveloped image, nothing appears in the Magnifying Glass pane.  If a DNG image is Developed, then the Magnifying Glass displays but incorrectly.

    2.  Where are Develop mode changes stored for DNG files?  There does not appear to by an XMP file created as with RAW files.

    1.

Hm, for my (in camera created) DNG files it seems to work. Does Shift+F3 (shortcut for Zoom Tool) work for you?

I have however noticed when picture is fit to page or smaller, Scroll Tool does selecting instead of scrolling (which kinna makes sense I guess; but Scroll Tool button is pressed, not Select Tool).

If you have a specific file that demonstrates the problem, you might want to find a place to post it and then include a link here so others can try to reproduce the issue.

As for where Develop mode changes are stored, DNG supports embedding XMP info within the file rather than requiring sidecars - that is indeed its primary advantage. So I'd assume the processing paramters are written to the XMP area within the file itself, just as is the case where you write IPTC or EXIF info to DNG files.

    Marc,

Thanks for the response.  Is it then also true that like with XMP files, each software vendor's changes are stored in a separate section and are processed uniquely by that vendor's software?

By the way, the modify date on the DNG file doesn't appear to change after edits are made.

When I make changes to a DNG image using ACDSee Pro 3 those changes are not visible in Adobe Camera RAW, and vice a versa.  I also note that when using Capture NX2, the changes are actually stored within the original NEF file and the file gets larger every time the image is edited.

Is there some way to make non-destructive changes to a RAW file (or DNG file) which are visible by other programs?

Am surprised when you say ACR non-destructive changes are not visible in Pro3.  Most Adobe products have an option to 'update the embedded preview' which will then 'translate' ok into Pro3 but not in processing mode.

each software vendor's changes are stored in a separate section and are processed uniquely by that vendor's software?

    Correct

The facility to update the embedded preview in ACD apps has been requested many times - let's hope it makes it into the next release.

    Yes.

When I make changes to a DNG image using ACDSee Pro 3 those changes are not visible in Adobe Camera RAW, and vice a versa.

As Sam says, with ACR, it's possible to embed a preview - a JPEG conversion of the image with the processing in place - within the DNG file.  And ACDsee can display that.  But it is true that ACD cannot actually understand the processing parameters and recreate that processing in develop mode, and nor can ACR understand ACDSee's procesisng.  That just doesn't happen - no program is able ever to understand the processing instructions left by any other program.  There is no standardization in this area at all.

I also note that when using Capture NX2, the changes are actually stored within the original NEF file and the file gets larger every time the image is edited.

That would be because Capture NX2 is also creating a JPEg preview and inserting it into the NEF file, just as ACR can do with DNG.

See above.  The most you can do is get one program to display the *preview* embedded by another program; they won't actually be able to understand each other's settings.
