Default start folder lost

I keep all my data on Firewire external hard drives. Occasionally the photo drive "goes to sleep" if it hasn't been accessed in a long time, and then when I finally get around to running ACDSee, it doesn't see the drive, decides it doesn't exist and immediately changes the Tools>Options>Browser>Default start folder to its internal default, without asking me! I want more respect from my software, please. This is in Windows Vista, incidentally.
