Default Folder

  • Hello All, and thanks in advance for the answers you may provide on my topic today.

    I cannot get ACDsee to understand once and for all which is my default browsable folder.

    In the Options menu, I have specified the folder where my pics are located. Obviously, I am not storing 40 000+ pics on my local HD. I use an external disk for that. (A quick observation, I have a problem understanding how a soft tagged "Pro" can actually point to the Windows My Pictures folder.)

    Irony apart, I face the following problem. If my external disk is not on when I open ACDsee, the soft automatically replaces the location on my external disk by the My Pictures folder in the default specified folder in the Options menu.

    Tired of that, I then opted to click "Remember from previous session" and closed ACDsee pointing to the desired folder on the external drive. The day after I double click on the ACDsee icon forgetting to turn the external disk on and here we go, a message saying that as the external drive is not plugged it will resettle for the My Pictures folder. No chance to cancel ACDsee's opening either and restart the procedure opening the HDD first.

    Anyone can give me a way out of that nonsense situation ?

    As I am here, a word to :

    - ACDsee's development team get that in your short term road map;

    - ACDsee's Marketing team, be sure to only tag Pro a software that allows a user quickly out and forever away of any Windows Mom and Pa default setting. We all know what they're worth.

    I think this isn't an an ACDSee issue but an operating system issue. An application can't locate a drive that isn't "mounted" and seen by Windows. When ACDSee launches and your external is not turned on, it can't locate a drive that to the system doesn't exist, and therefore it defaults to opening with the standard Windows "My Pictures" folder. (The program has to focus somewhere when the assigned location is not available.)

    (I have my images on a dedicated seperate partition D:\ on my main drive, and ACDSee opens to that drive without issue. But that's because it's always on and seen by Windows.)

    I think what I would do is turn on the external drive and then make a shortcut to the drive and place it in some folder on your C:\ drive. Then, set that folder as ACDSee's default folder. That way when ACDSee opens, the shorctut to the drive will appear in the thumbnail window. Clicking the shorctut will open your external drive if it's turned on...or give you a reminder to turn it on.

    This adds an extra mouse-click or two to accessing your images, but will save having to always reset the default folder in ACDSee.

  • Thanks QuBe !

    That's an effective workaround. I will also use it for my music folder as some players I use also mismanage the default folder option.

    I actually have my default startup folder a working folder on my local drive - this is where the pictures I haven't finished processing live, and is where I'm more likely to begin working.  Only when I'm done processing them do they get transferred to my external HD.  I have the external HD set up as a link in my Favorites window for (relatively) easy access no matter where I happen to be in the folder hierarchy.

    Cheers! :-)

    I double-checked the idea to make sure it worked by making a link to a backup drive I have in a mobile rack. The link appears in ACDSee when the dive is not connected, (but to see it, I had to change my custom file list filters back to "show all")

    Tools->Options->File List->Configure Filters.

    Marc reminded of a good point...if you don't have a lot of stuff in your C:\My Pictures folder, might as well drop the shortcut in there and never have to worry about resetting the default folder.

    Some years ago I bought direct from ACDSee PowerPack 5.0, but my HD crashed and I don't find my License Code. I did ask several times to ACDSee about but never an answer.

    Someone who can inform me how to install this withoud LC.?

    I live in the Netherlands.

    thanks and regards
