Database conversion problem (I think)

    Hi everyone!

I just migrated from a windows XP system and ACDsee 8.1 to a Windows Vista (64bit) system and ACDsee Pro 2.5.

Well at least that was what I was trying to do lol

During data base conversion everything seemed to go ok, it told me it was all done successfully and I have my category structure back now, but no thumbnails, no files nothing. All the categories are empty.

Oh, and to make things easier, I just took the exact drive I had on my old system and put it in the new one and during the conversion just pointed it to the new drive. When I did the database export on the old system, I had it export thumbnails etc, so I think it should have worked, but for some reason it didn't even though the converter thought it did.

    Help please!!!

What did I do wrong? What can I do to fix it?

I would hate to have to redo 2 years worth of tagging!!!

    Thanks so much!

    Birgit

It seems one or two other people have reported issues like this; you might try contacting customer support (click the Support link top left of this page) to see if they have any suggestions.

My suggestion is always to try going back to the old version, selecting all your images then running Database->Export->Database to create a *text* file of your whole db, then importing that into the new version (might require updating the version string at the front of the text file).  this is fairly foolproof, I find, but it does require thumbnails to be regenerated by running Catalog Files. So it's still time-consuming, but can be run overnight as opposed to requiring much input from you.

But there might be a simpler solution to your particular issue; I don't know.

Thank you for the suggestion. I had already gone back to the old version and it installed fine on the new OS and computer. However, you lost me a little bit on the various steps you suggested.

When you say "selecting all your images then running Database->Export->Database to create a *text* file of your whole db" what do you mean by "selecting images"? I wasn't aware I had to select anything prior to running a database export. How do I do that?

And I also have no clue what "updating the version string at the front of the text file" entails!

Thanks so much for your help!

The text file option under Database->Export->Database specifically says "for selected images".  there is also an "entire database" option, but that's not text.  You can try it, but it probably won't help across different versions.

So, click the "Image Well" icon on the Organize window, which will 9after a bit of a wait!) display *all* of the images ACDSee has in its db.  Or, if you don't really want everythig, but just your images under the Windows "Pictures" folder, say, then just list the contents of that folder and its subfolders (using the Folder window to expand the subfolders - hitting the "+ on the numeric keypad is a convenient shortcut to expand all subfolder one level).

Once you've got all your images displayed, select them all (Ctrl-A), then do the export.

And I also have no clue what "updating the version string at the front of the text file" entails!

I"m not sure, either.  But the first line or so of the text will proabbly have something about a version number in it.  If you do a small test export from the version you are trying to import into, then look at the first lines of that file, you'll see what those lines should look like, then change the first couple of lines of your exported database from the old version to match.
