Thanks Matt!
Now, let's try something new. You've begun generating some buzz, which is great. Now tell us more what the buzz is about! No harm in ACD generating some positive excitement about Canvas for once.
As for bugs and features, I think they've been quite well covered by now... If ACD still needs a list–!

You almost need something like the Aero/Aqua Taskforce, but that might be a little ambitious ;)

- mac version again :-)
- kml file support to publish to Google Earth
- dwg: the possibility to put a dwg file in the right coordinates, in the right position in a georeferential drawing. Now I'm not be able to do this. When I open a dwg file, Canvas asks me the scale ecc. Then a cursor appears for positioning the drawing. So I loose the real position.
- a lot of bugs in I/O

Matthew, tell us about the bug lists they already have. Assuming they lost everything in the hurricane, when did they begin to rebuild the bug list. I'm looking for the date they began to rebuild the list. Many of us, including myself, have sent bug lists all the way back to the time Canvas 8 was released. last year I once again sent a list via the Wizaerd forum.
I'll do it again, but I need to know what they already have.

At last a positive discussion about Canvas!
Just joined the forum, but have used Canvas since version 5, and as I use an elderly version (8) I do need to invest in something a bit newer to acommodate newer file formats (like PNG Alpha transparency, for instance, and current PDF formats).
I was already looking elswhere but if the next version does what I need it to do I would be a very happy bunny (figuratively speaking).
Having tried the later versions it is my personal impression that it is more that a bit of sprucing up that is required! So I'll be waiting with baited breath...

Matthew, where'd you go? Don't let the buzz die.
As for bug lists, if ACD doesn't know what the Canvas bugs are by now – !

They tell me I'll have a list of improvement for you soon. I'd love to get a list of current bugs in Canvas 11 for Windows so I could pass them on so if you have them, please share. Great ideas with the photo retouching on another thread. By the way, James Wang responds really quickly to problems and potential bugs, so please post. I forward posts here and he's really helpful.
Regarding Mac...I'd love to see an Intel optimized future version of Canvas. ACD said last year they have no plans for future Mac development, but I can always hope. Mac sales are certainly increasing so maybe someday...

Matthew, ACD does not need a Canvas bug list! If they don't know what they are by now (and many bugs are legacy/legendary), what with our reams of forum discussions over the last 10+ years, there is no point telling them again. It scares me to think they are sitting waiting for such a report before moving forward, assuming this is actually so.
Looking forward to seeing the list of upcoming improvements. Please make sure any new versions of Canvas are properly beta tested by experienced users (ie, anybody outside of ACD!) before development is too far along to incorporate fixes/improvements.

I'll echo the Beta testing bit - and use a full cross section of users please.
The GIS side is a specialist area that could certainly do with some work and I'm sure we could all add our own particular area of experyise.
I known last time they asked some GIS users, not sure how many (at least 1!!)
So yes - bring it on please.

This forum is a good place for them to start looking!
If Canvas is going to be taken seriously there really should be a Mac version - I personally use Win, but most professionals are Mac users.
Agree with rsands - a cross section of users doing real work is needed to test.

Please support the Mac platform. I have used Canvas since version 3.5.
Still use V.8 on 10.4. would upgrade if I saw a future.
thanks

Hi smamac, sorry not to have replied to one of your concerns earlier but here goes.
I am using Canvas 11, Windows XP SP2. I continually open dxf and dwg files in Canvas. Sometimes problems, like you describe, arise if you specify dimension units and scale in the dialogue that opens. I find that the following procedure works for me:
File>Open
In the usual manner, find and double click on the file you want to open
The Canvas DWG & DXF Import dialogue box opens
Change source unit to whatever unit your original drawing was in (it's always metres for me). Leave Drawing scale as "Fit to paper", leave paper format as "Default size". Leave all other boxes unticked.
Click OK
Let Canvas do what it wants to and the drawing will open complete with rulers that show the coordinates of the drawing. In my case that is usually an Eastings and Northings metres scale based on a UTM coordinate system that comes with the original dwg or dxf file.
Next change the scale of the drawing (Layout>Document Scale).
If the resultant drawing is not exactly on the paper space as you would like it. There are two very simple solutions.
1. Create a new pseudo-origin to shift the drawing to wherever you would like it to go by clicking and dragging the grid crosshairs in from the top left hand corner where the rulers join and assigning appropriate coordinate values to the new pseudo-origin - so simple in Canvas.
2. Use File>Print Area to define a print area that extends beyond the paper space shown in the Canvas drawing space - again so simple in Canvas.
It was actually seeing this capability for importing dwg and dxf drawings into Canvas that persuaded me to buy a license. It was just too easy by comparison with trying to achieve the same thing in CorelDraw which I had been using for the previous 20 years.
Good luck from sunny Australia

Paul do you have the GIS version?
You can reposition the drawing to fit on the paper wherever you like by chosing GIS/CHOOSE REFERENCE POINT.
That allows the drawing to sit where you want and any other GIS referenced data imported then sits in correct place - this doesn't interfere with the georeferenced data.

Better graphics tablet support would be a welcomed addition.

Mac version.

Viewports would be really nice. I use Canvas for preparing scaled site maps. It would be nice to be able to view a drawing as a viewport within a drawing border template in another drawing.

I'm actually close to purchasing v11 with the GIS module. Will this update be a freebie or will it require an update purchase. If a new purchase will be required, what is your anticipated update price? I'm putting together a budget proposal for the v11 purchase and I'd like to include the update pricing if I need to.

Thx for the answer, it works, not always, but it works :-)
