    Hi,

When do you expect updating RAW to include the Canon 50D?

    Thanks,

  • Hello,

I picked up the Canon 50D today... but can't use ACDSee Pro 2.5 yet...  Any news on when the update will be published?

    Thanks!

Bleh. This is nuts.  No wonder people pirate this program rather than pay.

    Hi all,

I have requested the next RAW update to include the 50D.There should be news about the 27th of this month, so just stay calm......and wait for the next RAW update.

    Thanks for your patience.

Maybe we had a quicker update if 'people' stopped stealing software.

I know you are insuating that I have not bought PM10 but I have, and have supported ACDsee from its very early days. But when a company with the overhead of Adobe can roll out an update to Camera Raw for CS3 (which I also have purchased) in less than a week I have to wonder why.

Certainly regression testing and compatabilty testing for products such as CS3, Photoshop, Lightroom and the many other programs that use ACR is a daunting task and for a corporation with the bulk of Adobe but they were able to have thier first update out in about one week .

ACDSee *promising* a date almost two months after the introduction of the camera leads me to believe that the introduction of new products (Photo Manager 2009 and Pro 2.5 for example) to sell is higher on the "todo" list than maintenance of products that you have already been paid for.

I feel that I have to get in here. If you take a look at the current camera raw campatibility list:

    http://www.adobe.com/de/products/photoshop/cameraraw.html

You will recognize that there is not support for 50D, D90 etc

It is true that Adobe released a beta version called 4.6 that has support for those models but this cannot be called a stable release.

Adobe states "Camera Raw 4.6 update
Support for the following cameras has been added. Visit the Camera Raw page for a complete list of supported cameras."

    • Canon 1000D (Digital Rebel XS/EOS Kiss F)
    • Canon 50D
    • Nikon D700
    • Nikon D90

CR 4.6RC (beta) was posted Sept.18 and the *stable* release posted Oct.10. I believe 4.5 would open the files as well though it couldnot make use of the full features.

The point of the thread was, "when is ACDSee going to have support for the 50D" and the question has apparently been answered; Oct.27 2008.

Thanks for your attention to the forum as at the very least, it is reassuring that you do indeed listen to your customers concerns.

It is suprising to me that the free look-alike photo manager XnView has supported the Canon 50D RAW from its release, but ACDSee is taking a "wait and we will post it when we are can" approach. ACDSee is an excellent program which I would find it hard to funtion without. Though sadly I feel that they are plagued by low quality control, 64bit compatability issues and lagging customer support.

Yes I now use XnView as a support program as it supports the 50D RAW. Though will be glad when ACDsee supports it as it is smoother and quicker than XNView.

    Hello texmax,

I am sorry that i have to correct you but you are wrong with this statement. Almost every picture viewer is able to support new raw formats quite easily by just analysing the new format to the extend where they find the spot of the embeded jpeg preview. This is just a single task that is quite easy to manage. Keep in mind that the embeded jpeg the viewer presents to you is by far not the sort of quality you get out of the real raw file. It is only 8Bit color instead of 16Bit and it is compressed.

ACDsee is not just supporting new formats on this "viewing the integrated jpeg" basis it does support the full potential of raw formats. This means that it ready the real raw data including information about iso, exposure, aperture, picture mode (i.e. portrait), the selected metering, the sharpness etc.

Analysing a new format for all those specs is a pretty tough job.

The first company to release real raw suppor for the 50D did so with a final version only a few days ago and not when the 50D hit the market two weeks bevor the Photokina in September.

Question: Why is there still no RAW support for i.e. 50D

Answer: Big companies have license contracts with every camera manufacturer they support and the costs of these licenses are reflected in their prices.

Many developers with good RAW support have to follow a different strategy. They have to analyze and implement new formats without these camera manufacturer instructions and they release RAW updates within reasonable time for new cameras.

The conclusion is that big players can offer RAW support even before new models hit the market and others shortly after new models are available.

I can understand that everybody with a new camera wants initial support by the chosen application to continue with the workflow as used to.

Since ACD provides regular updates for RAW support, my suggestions for the meantime is:

    1. You could choose to shoot RAW + Jpeg if your camera supports it. This way you could work with the Jpegs while you wait for the update and delete them later. In this case you could quit using the xn viewer and work with the jpeg workaround on ACDsee.

    2. Convert to DNG using the free Adobe DNG converter. This way you could even embed your original RAW while being able to work with your files in ACDsee.

Thank you for a very thorough, informative and professional response without critical overtones. I apologise for wasting your time through my own naivety. I will consider your suggested option or just wait a little longer until you release the raw update.

Thank you for taking the time to write a response.

The 50D is currently with Development. We hope to have it for the next update.

    Ron,

As Chippy said "I have requested the next RAW update to include the 50D.There should be news about the 27th of this month". The request was made and as I posted, Development is working on it. We are aware of the need and I am sorry that it did not make it into this update. I will post again when I have an ETA.

This is an interesting suggestion but, on my machine, with DNG converter 4.5 (downloaded today) I can't convert eos 50d files, even if Adobe says version 4.5 supports this camera. I get an error while reading file message. Raw Therapee reads them fine !

I sure hope the next update will be out soon.

Hello moriclau, the DNG converter 4.5 does not support the 50D. The next Version is 4.6 and then there is even 5.0 but the most current version actually is 5.1 So its the next->next->next version you are looking for which is already available for quite some time.

    See here:

    ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/photoshop/cameraraw/win/DNG_Camera_Raw_5_1.zip

Now it should be working, right?
