Cannot change sort order on removable drives

I am trying out version 10 right now but I've come up to a weird bug in the program. When I try and drag images to sort them on my removable USB drive ACDSee will not let me. Instead I get a circle with a line through it (can't do it) symbol as my cursor.

The weird thing is this just started happening...several days ago I was able to sort and move files around on the exact same USB drive.

From looking at simular issues on this forum I realized that maybe I had to add the folder(s) to the "Excluded folders" in the database settings. So I selected Database >> Excluded Folder Settings >> Add and chose my USB drive and I get this error: "You cannot modify the exclusion state of this folder. If the folder is on a CDROM or removable drive please use the "Always exclude removable drives" or "Always exclude CD/DVD drives" options."

I have looked everywhere in the options and cannot find this option.

Anyways...it is strange that it would stop working all of a sudden!!

    Thanks for any help! <<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

I just tried uninstalling and re-installing ACDSee 10, but the sorting problem still didn't change. Thanks for any help!

Actually, it's probably the other way around - custom sort is something that is presumably stored in the database and therefore wouldn't work on excluded folders.

As far as I know, that option is in Pro versions only - apparently the error message was generated by a part of the program that is shared between the versions.

My impression is that with non-Pro versions, removable drives are always included if the program is able to get a unique device ID. So if that drive used to work but now doesn't, I might start by guessing it used to produce a unique ID and now doesn't. I'd start guessing maybe a recent OS or driver update changed something. Or perhaps just using a different USB port.

You're right, it makes sense that it is the other way around.

Yeah I have heard about the unique IDs and USB drives... I get updates all the time for Windows like anyone else, and I haven't installed any drivers for my USB drive or USB controllers as it works in Windows without the need for software.

I have installed the trial version of ACDSee 5.01 from ACDSee's old versions site and with it I can sort files on the same removable USB drive!?

How does one reset the unique drive ID settings with ACDSee 10? It would not be good if the ID changed or got lost and then one couldn't reset ACDSee to a new ID. What ID information is this anyways?

    Thanks for your quick response! <<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile.gif" />

Odd that it worked with the old version. I wonder if it's algorithm for including/excluding drives was different. Anyhow, unfortunately, I'm stumped, and I don't know anything more about drive ID's. You could certainly try submitting a support ticket.

However, I'm also trying to figure out what you are trying to accomplish by custom sorting files on a removable drive. After all, it's not like the sort order would be honored by any other application or on any other system, and it's kind of the nature of removable drives to be used that way.

You would not do it with ACDSee.
ID info is used by ACDSee to reconize different drives. This could be a numerical number,or a unique name that is registerd on the drive itself.
You would have to use Explorer,or such, to chang the ID.
You could try this. Open explorer, go to your USB drive, and click Properties. Give your USB drive an unique name.
Then start ACDSee, and open the renamed USB.

Unfortunetly the "new and improved" acdsee community forum lost my last post :( (I also don't like how narrow everything is now, before I could read nearly 2-3 responses on one page, now it's lots of scrolling and everytime I hit ENTER it double-spaces)

    I'll reiterate:

Why I like to use the file sorting: I only use the sorting for renaming purposes, then never use it again for those files. I re-arrange image files in the order that I desire, then rename them sequentially. In this way, other people that view the images are viewing them in the order that I set...and a lot of them do not use ACDSee. I need to store the images on the removable USB drive because it is a shared resource amoung quite a few contributors and needs to be quite mobile.

    For example, these files below:

    DSC0012433.jpg, SNY_23-bk.jpg, flwrs0234.jpg, MPN0032.jpg

    I want in this order:

    SNY_23-bk.jpg, DSC0012433.jpg, MPN0032.jpg, flwrs0234.jpg

Then I rename them to this:

    PhotokinaCampaign2008-09-30-001, PhotokinaCampaign2008-09-30-002, PhotokinaCampaign2008-09-30-003, PhotokinaCampaign2008-09-30-004

After that, I don't need the sort order to remane effective in ACDSee as the file naming sorts it like I desire.

I do not want the database always checking the drive and but I would like to be able to change the sort order to do my renaming.

CHIPPY: I have tried renaming/labelling the removable drive to different names in File Explorer but it doesn't change anything, I still can't change the sort order for that removable drive.

Makes sense.  In that case, if you don't end up finding a way to get ACDSee to allow your drive to be cataloged, I'd suggest an alternate approach: create a temporary category (or have one in permanent use just for this purpose), assign your images there, and then display the category contents and sort them.  Note you have to have the "Include sub-categories" option turned off for this to work.  Once sorted, you can rename them, and of course them will be renamed on the drive, because they never left the drive.

Alternately, of course, you could copy the files to your local drive, sort and rename them there, then copy them back.  But that's considerably more work.

I've never used categories, how is this done? This sounds pretty time-consuming with many different folders for our images?

I have also tried 2 other USB removable drives with the exact same problem -- cannot sort files :(

Categories are pretty simple to use.  It's lik an alternate folder hierarchy structure, except your files don't actually *move* into those folders - they remain where they were.  And files can belong to multiple categories.

There are several ways to do it, but here'I'll outline one method.  The following are the steps you do once up front:

    - make sure the Organize window is displayed
    - right click the word "Categories" and select "New Category"
    - name it "Sorting", hit OK
    - Click your new category name in the list of categories (which will cause the browser to display the contents of that category).
    - Click where it says "Match Any/All" above the category list, make sure "Include sub-categories" is turned off
    - hit Back to return to wherever you were

Now, any time you have a bunch of files you want to sort for renaming purposes, select those files and assign them to this  "Sorting" category.  There several ways to assign selected images to a category.  One is to right click the category name in the Organize window and select Assign Items. Another is to check the box next to the category name on th Properties->Database window. Another is to right click the select items and choose Set Categories-><name of category>, and another is with the Set Categories button on the toolbar.

You can assign all the images you want iat once, or select a few, assign, select a few others, assign, etc.  The images assigned don't have to all be from the same folder.

Anyhow, after assigning the images to the category, click the category name in the Organize window to display its contents.  There are your files.  Sort away, then rename.  When you're done, you can either remove the items from the category or not - once renamed, they shouldn't be in your way next time you do this.

I wouldn't necessarily give up on figuring out why the USB drive won't work, but frankly, I'm kind of surprised ACDSee would ever allow a USB drive in the database.

Hey Marc, thanks for all the great help, that worked fairly good even though it wasn't as quick or convenient as sorting files on the fly directly.

For the heck of it I decided to try ACDSee Pro: good news, with Pro I can actually sort files on the USB drives with no issues!

Besides some little issues, I'm going to go ahead and buy the Pro version as this was the biggest thing holding me back.

Thanks again for all your help, you were very helpful!
