Automatic Categories don't tidy themesleves and can't be deleted

    1. Suppose you catalog a photo with the Photographer field set to SMITH.
    2. In the Auto categories list under Photographer, SMITH appears on the list. Very good.
    3. Now you delete the photo.
    4. If you select SMITH in the list there are no photos taken by him. OK.
But there is no way to ever remove SMITH from the list.
You can try all the Database optimisation processes - no change.
The only way is to delete the entire database and start agin. This can't be right.

Yeah, this has come up before. Hopefully it will be addressed at some point.

Note that if you are in the habit of always embedding all your important database information into the IPTC fields of the images themselves, then deleting the db and starting over isn't actually that big a deal. - simply running Catalog Files and then Batch Set Information to copy the ITPC fields wherever you want will give you the clean slate you desire. You can also get this effect by exporting your entire database to a text file, deleting the db, restarting ACDSee, then importing the text file and running Catalog Files to regenerate thumbs. Either way, it's a bit of work, so not something you'd do casually. But if you need to get it done, it *is* possible, and doesn't actually require you to re-enter all your database information or anything like that.

Yes indeed. I prefer to keep all data in the files anyway, and to use a file structure and file naming to hold information as well, that way one is not dependent on a specific computer system or database. It is good to hear it is likely to be fixed in the future.

Since I see from your signature that you don't work for ACD, I would like to ask you another related question please. I'm checking out this product and I see that it has not been updated for quite a long time, not even a bug fix. Do you think the product has a future? Will there be a bug fix version, or a version 3 do you think?

For example in another message recently I've commented on a serious bug that loses files completely (but rarely). Do you know if there are actually people at ACD who are likely to fix this kind of thing?
