Anyone use ImageIngester w/ACDSee Pro?

I have the same problems with Device Detector 5.x - it hangs every time (well, maybe 99%) but would like the workflow benefits: batch settings of data, catalogging, etc.

I spotted a reference to ImageIngester and feel that the $40 would be worth it -- IF it works reliably with ADSee Pro 2.5.

Anyone here using this software reliably?

I have used imageingester and it works fine with ACD but I found it a bit clunky and prefer DownloaderPro which is $30.  Both have trial downloads.  With either you disable the device detector and have autoplay pick up your downloader app on inserting a card in the reader.

I used to use the free version of ImageIngester and it worked fine, but despite *occasional* hangs (I don't use "Device Detector"), I am happy enough with the new 2.5 import facility that I stopped using ImageIngester.  I can't imagine the pro version of ImageIngester would cause any difficulites if the free one didn't, though.  Only real difference was that the free version wouldn't embed IPTC metadata on import.  Assuming you use that feature with the Pro version, ACDSee *should* notice the IPTC info when it browses the folder you are importing into.

    Marc,

I thought Device Detector WAS the import capability ACDSee offered. When I bypassed Device Detector I had to:

    1. Create a folder to hold the new images in the overall "incoming" folder on my desktop computer

    2. insert my card into a reader

    3. Navigate to the card

    4. Select appropriate image files.

    5. Right-click and drag this set to the new folder

...and all this still doesn't get me auto saving, in-process renaming, keywords, categories, etc.

Did I miss a better way to do this within Pro 2.5? (I have seen so many instances of important info being left out of the Help Files I don't trust what I read there.)

    Thanks for your reply above!

Do you mean something other than menu: File>Import>From device?

    Sam,

I had never invoked the Import function from that menu and flyout. I had to go look at it after your message, because I took "Import" to mean either a batch of files or raw data from a scanner. When I insert a card in the reader I get a smaller dialog box that asks if I want to Import into ACDSee or "Do nothing" (I think that second one is right.)

If I choose "Import with ACDSee I get the full set of choices mentioned before - these are the functions I want to have. It's the dialog box and set of instructions that I thought Device Detector provided, not Import.

When I use what I now know is Import it hangs after a couple of images. I have to CTRL-ALT-DEL out. I was blaming Device Detector. I will try the Import after:

    1. take Device Detector out of the startup process

    2. try the Import process once again to see if still hangs.

    All,

OK, I tried with Device Detector no longer starting automatically and the "Import" function hangs as before after the first image. That is, the second image displays and I believe in some instances is imported. But today's freeze required -- as usual -- that I CTRL-ALT-DEL out of Pro 2.5.

Any suggestions? I will put in a support ticket and check back with the group.

I second Sam with Downloader Pro.  It has a lot of options to allow you to rename on import to the folders you want, plus other useful features.  One feature I use is to make copies of the original  images/videos from the camera, as they are downloaded, for backing up later - as recommended in all decent DAM workflows.  Another adds the separately captured GPS positioning to the images during the download.  The whole process is painless and when setup, is brainless!

I've never used Device Detector, I actually never installed it, and I still get some occasional hung ups when using Import. But it is quite random the image it will stop on.

    All,

To paraphrase my reply from Tech Support: "We know there a 'few users' who have this problem but cannot reproduce it so have no fix. Perhaps you'd like to downgrade to v2.0. Sorry for the inconvenience."

I replied that they didn't show much interest in fixing it if they weren't asking for more data about my system (beyond the info I had already sent) and I haven't received a reply to that. I wasn't angry, just pointinmg out what they were showing priorities to be.  This is a good product when working and I will look at Downloader Pro as the extension to ACDSee that will make it work. I promise a report. I will also look closely at how Bridge and Lightroom in CS4 work together to provide their pro workflow. I was thinking of jumping up from CS3 soon. I'll always watch developments at ACDSee with interest.

I hope there are people in the Adobe forums with the dedication, knowledge, and skills of Marc, Sam, Moongate, others here. Thank you all for the illumination and help.

I also recommend DLer Pro... wonderful program that does a ton of stuff - for me, it was very useful to setup multiple camera profiles that allows for file renaming based on the camera.. DNG conversion as an automated step is also quite nice.  Enjoy!
