What I'd like to do is have a field that represents the physical storage reference for an image. For original digital images this would be of no use as there is no physical storage. However, for the many thousands of negatives/slides that are in my collection and that I've scanned to a digital format I'd like each digital file to have a reference to the physical storage index/location of the original image. Ideally this would be a new field in the ACDSee DB but does anyone have any ideas how to achieve this without a new field?
I am currently scanning thousand of photos from my father who was a photographer and I initially use the file name itself as a reference to physical storage. I'm using plastic boxes (30 cm long, 22 cm wide and 5 cm high) which are internally divided into smaller compartments (4 rows, 8 columns). When I scan a film strip or roll, I already know in which box and compartment I am going to store it. This way, when scanning I can name the files accordingly. For example, a file named CV7-26-3.jpg tells me that this photo is in Green Box 7 (CV are the Spanish initials for Green Box) and in compartemnt at row 2 column 6. The last number is the film strip number in that compartment.
What I will soon do, for more security and in case I want to change file names, is to run a Batch Set Information and insert Filename (w/o extension) (*) into and EXIF or IPTC field, or mayby in Database botes, but I haven't decided which yet.
(*) Filename (w/o extension) is one of the File Properties available when you select to Insert Metadata in any of the fields available in the Batch Set Information.
