I use ACDSee Pro many years and I'm very happy with it. It is installed on a laptop with Vista. Now I have a big problem. When I startup I get the message: "ACDSee has encountered...". I reinstalled the software twice, I follow the 4 options in the support item (clear registry, delete database etc) but the problem stays. Anybody a suggestion??

Yes, buy a license of idimager pro, a very nice software with reliable contact to their users (!), or wait for a stable version of acdsee 'pro'.
if you follow all the posts of dissapointed acd-users, and see what paying users are having ridicolous or no support at all - you'll understand what i mean!no; i'm not related to any software company.
i used good ol' thumbs plus for several years, but their program was stuck since years. they sell licenses for a a new version since march 2008 - without having a working beta out til today!

Antoine, thank you for the tip! Imimager likes a good program and alternative for ACDSee!
Till now I have no reaction or support of ACDSee. The problem is that I need photo software nearly every day for my work.

Finally: Someone else who knows what I'm talking about! I've had this same problem since 2.0; and it's worse with 2.5. During a half hour session, I typically end up rebooting 5 or 6 times (if I don't just give up first). Multiple attempts to resolve the problem with ACDSee customer service have gotten me nowhere. I have yet to find any photo database manager software that's as fast or as flexible as ACDSee Pro; but I'm sick and tired of the constant interruptions for rebooting. I have Adobe CS3 Bridge and Lightroom 2.0; but they're just not fast or flexible enough for large scale, rapid viewing of multi-gigabytes of files.
If you have any ideas on how to fix this problem, or for a better alternative (must be FAST!), please let me know!

This problem has existed for several versions of ACDSee, not only the Pro version but the basic version as well, going back to v7 or v8, can't remember which. ACDSee repeatedly blames the problem on a corrupt database, or somesuch, but the truth is that somewhere in the code, ACDSee screwed up, obviously can't find the problem, and continues to blame it on something on our computers. So typical of software manufacturers.
It is indeed an incredibly-annoying problem and one it would be nice to have ACDSee admit and, more importantly, FIX.

I have had exactly the same problem for three days!
I use ACDSee for many years, now ACDSee Pro 2.5. Three days ago I connected my new phone via USB (SE C902i), and ACDSee crashed. After this I cannot start it again - all the times I get the message "ACDSee has encountered.... and will close now".
I also reinstalled software (build 335), I followed options in KB (clear registry with r_acdsee.exe, delete CDX files, I also deleted ALL files in .....\25Pro\Default, and database), and no result! Still cannot start ACDSee browser (ACDSeePro25.exe).
What is interesting other programs from ACDSee working okay, i.e. I can double click on an image to view it, scroll to next or previous image in the folder, go to edit mode, edit and save the picture, but when I go to browser (e.g. double click again) - program CRASHES!
What is surprising, when I login to another account on the same computer, browser is working fine.
Since now I have no reply from ACDSee tech support, but I am waiting for any suggestions.
If I solve the problem by myself, I will let you know :-))Posted On November 30, 2008 - 01:54 PM (7 months ago) (Permalink to this post) -
Hello, I have same problem than mxw from two months ago and I dont have solution, and ACDSee tech support didn´t answer, well this software doesnt work anymore

mxw,
Are you by any chance, using Nokia, or Sony Ericsson, phone software? If you are, read these threads. You might get some hints from these, and if you do a "Nokia" search in the forum ,you will come across more suggestions.
It seems that the phone software, and ACDSee do not interact properly ,with each other, and the way of installing each piece of software, solves the problem. This is why, when you login to another account,ACDSee works, because the phone software, is probably not loaded, or installed for another account

thank you for a reply,
yes, I am using Sony Ericsson phone - but I am not using (so far) any software from Sony Ericsson CD - I just wanted to connect the phone as a standard card reader using Vista driver.
Generally, it was connected successfully (as "Sony Ericsson C902" - without drive letter), I could see directories on the phone (both phone and memory card), copy files from/to the phone - but only using system explorer.
When I started ACDSee browser and click on "My computer" and then "C902" it showed also the directory tree correctly, but when I entered the phone camera directory (My Computer\C902\Memory Stick (TM)\DCIM\100MSDCF) it went crazy - first it showed all images as black boxes without any thumbnails, then all images became directories (directory DSC00001.JPG, directory DSC00002.JPG, etc.).
After that ACDSee browser crashed (was terminated) and since than it was not possible to start it again (with or without the phone connected).
There is no doubt, the problem is caused by the 'old fashion' digital camera/phone driver (by Microsoft?) dedicated to only copy/paste files in some specific way.
I know the ACDSee browser works in some way: e.g. when I delete all CDX etc. files (....\25Pro\Default is empty) after ACDSee restart, this directory is filled again with CDX, DBF, and FPT files (112 in total), and than browser crashes.
So?
Do we have a contact with the ACDSee browser author? ;-))))----
BTW,
these links are not working, but I already found these topics :-))There the solution was to uninstall the Nokia software - but I do not have this software installed yet (SE neither), so there is nothing to uninstall...... (except the C902 driver, but where it is in Vista?)

I have the same problem Acdsee support didn't even reply to my e-mail, what slack software support. I paid for a product which does not work, I even formatted my pc and reinstalled only installing Acdsee 2.5 on the system, with the latest system drivers only and it still constantly crashes.
Very dissapointed

How did you email them? As far as I know, they don't have a published regular email address. To contact customer support, you are supposed to use the "support ticket" mechanism accessed via the Support menu at the top of this page.

PROBLEM SOLVED: (so far :-)) )
(I just received a reply from ACDSee tech support)
1. open regedit, go to HKCU/Software, and delete whole 'ACD Systems' tree.
2. open file explorer, go to C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\ACD Systems\Catalogs (in Vista), and rename directory '25pro' to f.ex. '25pro_old'
that's it! it works! at least it worked for me :-))
one important thing: both points must be performed together!
you cannot do pt.1., start ACDSee to check, and than do pt.2. - this will not work.
and ACDSee (any part of the package) cannot run during that time.of course in this way you will loose all database and thumbnail information (but I am not using ACDSee database - only file-embedded information, so it was not a problem), and all configuration data (toolbars and Alt-O options). but you will have a working ACDSee browser and you will not loose f.ex. batch processor settings ;-))
ACDSee tech support said it was a problem of corrupted ACDSee thumbnail database, so the cure was to delete (rename) all database files and delete all registry settings.
after doing both points ACDSee will start as a new installation, first registering all plug-ins, and than asking for database import from previous versions or installations - of course it should be ignored.
best wishes,
mxw.
(with working ACDSee again)Posted On December 4, 2008 - 01:02 AM (7 months ago) (Permalink to this post) -
From what I've seen, most of the posts from people experiencing the "ACDSee must close now" error have been performing editing prior to crash. I seldom use ACDSee 2.5 for editing purposes: For me, it's exclusively a file manager; yet I experience the same problem.
I have about 100GB of images on a dedicated drive (seperate from OS & applications) on a Windows Vista Premium machine. Editing is performed in Lightroom. ACDSee is used to view files, create directories/folders, rename and move files, and delete them: Basic file management functions.
The crashes may occur during any one of these functions. Generally (with a few exceptions) they don't start until I've been working for several minutes. Once I relaunch ACDSee, it will usually run fine for between 5 - 15 minutes before the next crash; and crashes become somewhat more frequent over time. Shutting down the computer and rebooting seems to have a temporary effect: It takes a longer time until the first crash occurs; but crashes soon become more frequent again.
I have not found any correlation between crashes and size of file, database in which the file is located, type of file (jpeg, raw, tiff), or any other commonality. It makes no difference whether other software is running at the same time or not. Very rarely will I be able to work for more than half an hour before the first crash occurs.
I'm a photographer, not a computer expert; so I've been reluctant to do some of the (to me) complex "fixes" attempted by other contributors; especially since none of them have been verified as having successfully and permanently remedied the problem. As previously mentioned, I've discussed the problem with ACDSee customer support without success. This problem first appeared with ACDSee Pro 2.0: I don't recall having it on any previous version; and I've used ACDSee for years; on several different computers.
Like others on this forum, I'm amazed that such a common problem seems to be completely unacknowledged by ACDSee staff. Even a simple "We don't know what the problem is, but we're working on it" would be a comfort. For this same problem to continue through two versions of the software makes it even worse; and, as others have said, the fact that it's occuring in a so-called "Pro" application makes it totally unacceptable. I can only hope that, with a repeatable example of the issue now having been acknowledged by the moderator, we'll see some progress in achieving a solution.

The only time Pro crashes on my machine is if I resize an image, then add a border. Otherwise it is completely stable no matter what I am doing in it. I use it every day and it is always open. Vista Home Premium, HP with 2 gigs ram.

I've had the same problem with "encountered a system error" since v8.0 and all the way to v2.5. Then today it wouldn't start at all. No error came up but the thumbnail percentage just stopped at some point leaving me with no choice but to force the program to close.
I did MXV suggested and it worked. Tried to use my old database but the I'm back to no error and a frozen ACDSee.

Yes, Yes, Yes -- Thank You!! Four months ago I installed Pro 2.5 but rolled back to 2.0 b/c of problems. Three days ago I got a new phone (HTC Touch Diamond - Winows Mobile 6.1). The next time I used ACDSee I received the dreadful warning (i.e.: ACDSee Pro 2 Photo Manager has stopped working).
I uninstalled the software but when I tried to reinstall, I ran into the same problem (would not install but rather gave same warning). FINALLY SUCCESS!! I followed the advice from this thread but had to revise a tad in order to get ACDSee to reinstall:
BACKUP OR COPY YOUR DATABASE AS THIS WILL DELETE EVERYTHING!
1) Open regedit, go to HKCU/Software, and delete whole 'ACD Systems' tree.
2) Open file explorer, go to C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\ and DELETE ENTIRE ACD Systems Directory
3) Search for "acd" in C:\Program Files & delete all files where 'company' = "ACD" (hover over files to ascertain)
Good luck and thanks for all those who have posted.

We have had the same problem with ACDSEE Pro 2.5 , and have found away around the problem.
1. Open Explore, select your image from your folder, double click on image.
2. Open Tools, click on ACDSEE Pro.
3. ACDSEE will open and load the image, the error message will come up.
4. Ignore the message, double click on image and continue working with ACDSEE.
You can edit and save. No probs. Good Luck

ACDSEE Pro 2.5 will crash if there is a Paint Shop Pro file ( .pspimage) in the current folder. The solution is to disable the PSP decoder ID_PSP.apl.
